Pest controllers were called out hundreds of times to Northern Ireland hospitals last year due to infestations of rats, mice and bedbugs.

Rodents and insects were spotted in A&E departments, hospital wards and even kitchen and dining areas.

In total more than 3,000 pest sightings were reported at hospital facilities during the last three years.

The Belfast Trust, the biggest health trust, recorded the highest number of pest sightings – 1,381 across the three years.

The South Eastern Trust had a further 588 reports, while the Northern Trust had 524 sightings.

The Western Trust had 429 sightings, while a further 93 reports were recorded at the Southern Trust.

HENDERSONVILLE, TN (WSMV) – Bedbugs in a hospital room?

One mother, who just had a baby in a Sumner County hospital, said bedbugs bit her 11-year-old daughter in the hospital’s labor and delivery suite.

The mom said the suite had a couch on it and she said that’s where she saw the bedbugs that she said bit her daughter.

Jamie Turner had just given birth to her third child on Oct. 16 at TriStar Hendersonville Hospital. That’s where she said she took a picture of a bedbug crawling on her 11-year-old daughter. She said the girl was sleeping on the couch in the same room where she had just given birth.

“I thought it was very disgusting to see the bugs there, period,” said Turner. “I just had a baby and that’s one of the things you wouldn’t think of to run across, to have bedbugs in the room with a newborn baby.”

You can see bumps in her 11-year-old daughter’s face. There are marks on her arm too.

“She was complaining about itching,” said Turner.

Gosport pub and restaurant closed for two days due to mice infestation

THE Cocked Hat in Gosport was closed after customers complained about rodents in the restaurant.

The Greene King-owned pub, in Privett Road, was forced to call in a pest control firm on Thursday morning – after several mice had run across customers’ feet in the dining area last week, according to a member of staff.

The member of staff said the pub had a problem with mice over the last two years.

A spokesman from Greene King said: ‘We take our cleanliness and hygiene standards extremely seriously and once we become aware of this issue, we took immediate remedial action. The pests have now been eliminated from the building and the pub has now reopened.

Gosport Borough Council said it had not been contacted about the situation and that the pub had closed under its own volition, and not due to any order.

Customer complaint about rodents closes restaurant

Oxford City Council environmental health officers forced an Oxford restaurant to close after mouse droppings and flies were found in food service areas.

Following a customer complaint about My Sichuan, The Old School, Gloucester Green, officers from the Business Regulation team called to investigate on Monday 2 September. They found widespread evidence of active mouse infestation and heavy fly activity in the premises, which posed a significant risk of food contamination. A hygiene emergency prohibition notice was issued requiring immediate closure of the restaurant.

Following a hearing at Oxford Magistrates Court on Friday 6 September the court issued a formal closure order. The restaurant’s management was represented in court.

BENGALURU: It’s not just traffic that gets motorists exasperated in Bengaluru. Rodent menace is turning out to be a major headache too. A rising number of motorists are thronging workshops with complaints of rats chewing or damaging wiring harness of vehicles, particularly cars.

Gearing up for the bedbug’s season

Chances are, you or someone you know has had a run-in with bed bugs. It might have happened in a thoroughly clean bedroom. Or maybe it was a hotel room, office or college dorm.

LITTLE ROCK, Ar. (KARK) – Between family visits and getaways this holiday season, many may not be aware of the common unwanted travel companion of bed bugs. They’re known for being hitchhikers and can travel on people and their belongings.

“They’re about the size of an apple seed, kind of dark brownish in color,” Hal Johnson, Termnix Branch Manager, said.

Pest management company Terminix recently released the Top 50 Bed Bug invested cities for 2019. Philadelphia, New York, Dallas-Fort Worth, Indianapolis and Cincinnati top the list. Memphis came in at number 17. Little Rock was number 23 and Fort Smith was 30.

Terminix has this advice for those traveling to hotels over the holidays.

A family from Florida tells MTN they ran into exactly that here in Bozeman.

Lesli Rubin claims that she, her husband, and her seven-year-old son were in the middle of a trip across the country, enjoying the summer, when they stopped for the night at a Quality Inn and Suites in Bozeman on June 25.

This can best summarize how truly significant libraries are and their influence in catering to the imagination and consciousness of a nation.

We all know that books contribute to civilization, and therefore they must be treasured.  Jorge Luis Borges once said, “I have always imaged that paradise will be a kind of library”.  But imagine a paradise which is repeatedly invaded by unwanted intruders. It is tarnished – the picture-perfect paradise.

That is exactly how a library is when it is intruded by creepy crawly creatures such as termites. Books are a haven for readers- they are also a feast for termites.

Termites are known to feed on dead plant material, generally in form of wood, leaf litter, soil or animal dung. Owing to their great interest in woods many termite species are known to do great damage to unprotected buildings and wooden structures. Moreover, their habit of remaining concealed often results in their presence being undetected until the timbers are severely damaged and exhibit surface changes. Once termites have entered a building, they do not limit themselves to wood; they also damage paper, cloth, carpets and other cellulosic materials.

Two weeks after its opening in Jan 2012 the Bloy Community library was attacked by termites with all the books completely destroyed resulting in roughly USD 10000 and more costs which would have to be incurred to address the damage done to the library.

While termite damage to books and cupboards was evident it was surprising to note that even concrete walls of the libraries were damaged.  

Further investigation and study revealed that concrete floors and walls develop cracks over time. This leads to holes in the pipes or wires and through the walls where termites can squeeze through.  Termites can tunnel best when the ground around them is moist. Concrete slabs keep some moisture directly underneath the home, which attracts termites. There is an urban legend that says that termites can eat through concrete to get into a home. In fact, termites do not eat concrete. They can squeeze through very tiny cracks, so it sometimes seems like they have eaten their way through.

When it comes to insect infestations, public libraries cannot catch a break these days. There have been numerous news stories in the media telling about various insect pests infesting libraries. For example, a few months ago a well publicized bed bug infestation occurred in a Boston library. At first, Stephens thought that he was looking at ants and their anthills, but the insect’s strange appearance led him to assume that the bugs were termites. Stephens also found several individual termites crawling around certain remote locations around the library. Stephens promptly contacted an expert termite inspector in order to have the insects properly identified. The inspector took one look at the insects and wasted no time telling Stephens that termites were invading his library.

JAKARTA: South Jakarta resident Putri Buddin, 23, has to let millions of rupiah in cash go after the bills she had stored inside a cabinet were damaged and eaten by termites.

Putri shared a photo of the damaged cash on her Twitter account @putribuddim. As of Wednesday afternoon, the post garnered more than 2,600 retweets and 2,700 likes.

She said that she stored the money inside the cabinet last year for her grandmother, who has recently passed away.

At a time when Indian banks are facing acute liquidity shortage and a consequent impact on the flow of credit to productive sectors of the economy, a startling revelation has come to light about currency notes worth Rs 3.75 crore being eaten away by termites in the vaults of State Bank of India.

The country’s largest public-sector lender lost the money to white ants at its regional office in the Brabanki district of Uttar Pradesh.

Although the incident dates back to 2010, the information came to light only on Wednesday, when Minister of State for Finance Namo Narain Meena stated it in a written reply to a Lok Sabha question.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has since asked all banks to undertake anti-termite measures.

The RBI in May this year had also directed banks to follow a clean-note policy and issue only clean currency notes to public.

The power behind your power outages

What’s the biggest danger to the power grid? Hackers? Terrorists? Er, squirrels.

You’ve probably noticed, squirrels seem to be everywhere. The critters can also hit close to home, knocking out power.

Recent news reported states that squirrels are responsible for 14 percent of Huntsville Utilities outages in 2019 where among the total 2,884 total outages through mid-December, squirrels were responsible for 207 of them.

One might wonder the need for these notorious mammals being so interested in closely exploring the cables, even when these cables don’t suit their palate? The answer is simple; Most of the time squirrels gnaw to fulfill a portion of their dietary habits – opening hard-shelled nuts. If, however, squirrels do not have an adequate dietary reason or opportunity to exercise their incisors, there is a danger of the teeth “overgrowing”. In these cases, the incisors can prevent the squirrel’s mouth from closing (severely restricting its ability to eat), or the teeth may actually cause injury to the animal, including puncturing the roof of the mouth. If squirrels have need of wearing down their incisors, and there are no other hard substances nearby, they will gnaw on cable. Wildlife, branches and equipment failures are among the causes of what appears to be a higher-than-normal number of power outages in New Westminster in 2019.

Statistics provided to the Record by the city’s electrical utility indicate there were 35 outages between Jan. 4 and Nov. 22, including some on the same day.

New Westminster, which operates its own electrical utility, is a city that’s long prided itself on having fewer power outages than other municipalities.

Cockroaches – The invincible pest

Cockroaches are notoriously resilient creatures. Capable of living headless for weeks on end, holding their breath for around five to seven minutes and even surviving nuclear radiation, the insects serve as formidable enemies for humans hoping to rid their homes of pesky roach infestations. But these tenacious qualities aren’t the only signs of the animal’s seeming invincibility: A new study published in the journal Scientific Reports suggests cockroaches are becoming increasingly resistant to pesticides, paving the way for a near-future in which it will be “almost impossible” to control the pests with chemicals alone.

How, you might wonder, does a roach become resistant to poison? A single organism — a single roach, a single bacterium — doesn’t become resistant to a chemical. The population does.

In any given population, there’s variation. Some individuals may have an inborn resistance to a chemical while others do not. When a pest population is treated with that chemical, the ones without the resistance die and the ones with it live. The survivors pass down their resistance genes to the next generation. And then suddenly, you end up with a population of individuals mostly resistant to that chemical.

New research has now found that some types of cockroaches are developing a resistance to insecticides making them even more difficult to kill.

Cockroaches have a reputation of being one of the hardiest pests on Earth, and you’ve probably heard that the insects could survive a nuclear war. 

What or will not kill a cockroach has become the source of many old wives tales and studies have even shown that a roach can survive for weeks in a sealed environment without its head.

New research has now found that some types of cockroaches are developing a resistance to insecticides making them even more difficult to kill.

Researchers from Purdue University examined German cockroaches (Blattella germanica L.), which are one of the most common cockroaches found worldwide. Of all the roach species, Blattella germanica L. can lay more eggs in its lifetime with a female producing 30 to 50 eggs at a time.

COTTON FARMERS WORRY AS RODENTS DESTROY THEIR CROPS

NAGAPATTINAM: Voracious rodents have raided hundreds of acres of cotton crops in Thirumarugal of Nagapattinam district, causing extensive damage to farmers who lamented the loss could amount to lakhs of rupees.

Worried farmers’ unions said that the rodents, if left uncontrolled, could wreak further havoc to their remaining crops, and requested to the agriculture department to extend a helping hand to curb the infestation and announce monetary help.

Farmers in Perunattrangudi, Thennamarakudi, Thirukannapuram, and Thiruchettangudi have raised cotton on 600 acres, with expectation of high yield and better profit. This time, however, their hopes were dealt a crushing blow, after the rodents began raiding their lands.

The Fall Armyworm, a deadly pest

Looking out at his empty, red-earth field, Thai farmer Puang Timdon said his two-week-old maize crop didn’t stand a chance against the fall armyworm pest.

“All the 8 rai (1.28 hectare) I planted were all heavily infested,” said the 42-year-old from his farm in Ban Nong Tor town in Pak Chong district, 180 km (120 miles) northeast of the capital Bangkok.“The worm ate the whole field in three days, leaving so much damage that it wasn’t worth saving.”

Fall armyworm, a caterpillar that got the name because it invades crop lands in droves, much like an army, has rapidly spread across Asia since it was detected in southern India late last year. Fields in Bangladesh, Myanmar, Vietnam, Indonesia and Taiwan have fallen victim. In Thailand, it has badly affected the country’s corn crop, much of which is sold to the animal feed industry.
