Salmonella: Small rodents known to frequently carry the salmonella bacteria in their digestive tract, it spread through contact with rodent waste

Rat-bite fever: Rat-bite fever can occur in people who have been bitten or infected by the rat or another animal that has been contaminated by a rodent carrying disease

Removing rodents from the trap or poison like pest control will not keep them out of our house or restaurants as there should be a permanent solution to it.

A Chinatown restaurant that claimed to be of “high quality” was forced to temporarily shut after it was found to be infested with rodents.

Hunan Restaurant in Manchester’s Chinese district was so badly infested that mouse droppings were spotted on its work surfaces and food.

The extent to which the restaurant was infested was only laid bare when Manchester Council’s Environmental Health Officer carried out an inspection.

During the inspection, food packaging was found to have been gnawed on by mice, and mouse droppings were also found on food stock and near food containers.

The inspection also highlighted poor hygiene, with food building up around kitchen equipment, dirty air filters and unclean surfaces.

Access holes for rodents were found in the floor, around pipework and under doors – allowing mice to roam free about the restaurant.

Local country club restaurant shut down after the inspector finds evidence of rodents

A state health inspector temporarily closed the restaurant at an (Orange Country) country club after finding evidence of rodents.

The Rio Pinar Country Club restaurant, called Champions Grill on its website, was closed Dec. 6 after the inspector found dozens of rodent droppings in the kitchen and in storage areas.

The club is located at 8600 El Prado Drive in eastern Orange County.

“More than 20 dark fresh moist rodent droppings on shelves in the storage room in the kitchen area,” one of the violations read, according to the report from the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation.

The report noted rodent droppings under a dish machine, behind a cooler and in various other areas on the floor and in a plastic bucket.

There were also scratch marks along walls.

The evidence of rodents was among 31 violations the restaurant at the Rio Pinar Country Club totaled during the inspection, including five high-priority violations.

The restaurant was closed for two days until being allowed to reopen Dec. 8 after a follow-up inspection.

Bed bugs-every home owner’s nightmare

A general plot of all scary movies is that there are creatures that live with us and we cannot see them, but we can feel them. What if we told you that this happens in real life too? Philadelphia ranks No. 1 on list of cities most infested by bed bugs

Philadelphia hadn’t been the No. 1 most bed-bug-ridden city since 2014, but it has reclaimed the top spot for 2019. The City of Brotherly Love had dropped as low as No. 10 in 2017 before climbing back to No. 2 spot in 2018. Cleveland, Ohio, held the top spot in 2018 and 2017.

Terminix reports 22% of Americans have experienced bed bug problems, and for those with children, the percentage rises to 35%.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency classifies bed bugs as “public health pests,” and a 2014 study by Penn Medicine found they can transmit the parasite that causes Chagas disease through their bites. In 2002 they were added to the EPA’s “Lists of Pests of Significant Public Health Importance,” joining other pests and vermin, like lice, cockroaches, mice, and mosquitoes.

Bed bug survey: Los Angeles ranks 6th nationwide in infestations

The City of Angels ranks sixth in the nation among cities with the worst bed-bug problems.

Topping the list was Philadelphia, followed by New York, Dallas-Fort Worth, Indianapolis, and Cincinnati. The survey was based on the number of service calls the national pest-control firm handles at its various metropolitan branches.

Gas pipes- New Targets for Rodents

A gas sector, from the production of gas to its transportation, gives utmost priority to the safety aspects concerning it. Gas is commonly used in the workplace for heating the work environment and water supplies, cooking and processing products. The gas itself can come from a number of sources including natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and methane. These fuel gases are inflammable and toxic, and so safety measures are taken to prevent explosion or poisoning.

Gas can be supplied either piped into the premises from the mains supply or a storage tank, or in small cylinders used close to the appliance with a flexible hose connection. Gas gathering application involves transportation of gas via pipelines, and so does our home cooking system- be it LPG cylinder or PNG pipeline. Traditionally steel pipelines were used to carry the gas but pipelines composed of the polymer have certainly outweighed them in all aspects of the selection of pipe material.  Polymers are corrosion resistant, electrical and thermal insulators, fatigue resistant, chemically inert, lightweight, eco-friendly and cost-efficient. Durability and flexibility are the two most important factors supporting the use of polymer pipelines. Polymers like PP, HDPE, LDPE, and PVC are the most widely used polymer materials for the distribution of natural gas.

Are we still safe?

Several incidences have been noted in the past where rodents have damaged these polymer pipelines causing unfortunate fatalities.  On March 4th, 2016 there was an explosion due to a rat-eaten LPG pipe. The accident was reported at Tonca in Panaji. According to the report, In Panaji 10 flats, located in the Kamat Complex – Phase II, Tonca, were damaged, at 5.30 a.m. on Thursday, after an explosion occurred due to LPG leakage from a stove connecting the pipe. The LPG company officials found that the connecting pipe was eaten up by rats. Another fatal accident that took place was in Bengaluru city on November 14. Family of three succumbed to injuries they had suffered in a gas cylinder explosion at their house in Belathur Colony in Kadugodi on November 7. According to the officials, the hosepipe connecting the cylinder and stove was damaged as a rat had bitten it off. Shibin had cut that particular part and fixed it.

According to TNN, In 2013, Rat-nibbled a gas pipe which leads to an explosion, causing injury to 5 members of a family. This horrifying accident took place in Kondawa district of Pune. According to the officials, the gas had leaked through a 2mm hole on the rubber tube that a mouse had nibbled. The poorly ventilated kitchen added to the explosion’s intensity.

Yet another accident that took place was in the year 2007, August 8 where the Gas blast killed a pensioner which was caused after rats that gnawed through a lead pipe in her house. 

There are more than 2000 different rodent species. The classification of rodents include rats, mouse, beaver, gopher, paca, hamster, squirrel, etc. Rodents are flexible enough to go through even the slimmest of gaps. Rodents being ubiquitous creatures are present in large numbers at various locations and sometimes also find their way to gas pipelines causing a lot of loss and damage. The wood-boring pest

When you noticed a sprinkling of something that looked like sawdust on the floor by the door or in your wooden cupboards and cabinets and its drawers and discovered a few tiny round holes in the wood frame, your mind went to the obvious place: termites. Or maybe it could be carpenter ants?

A beetle?

Wood borers are tiny beetles whose larvae feed extensively on the wood. The wood worms make tiny pin size holes on the surface of wooden furniture or surface while emerging. Those tiny holes which you see on wood surface are actually the exit -holes where the adult wood borer has left.

These beetles are known for boring small holes in wood both in inside and outside environments. They can be difficult to detect as they bore through the inside of a wooden window and door frames, hardwood floors, and even wooden furniture.

They are also referred to as ‘Powderpost beetles’ since they reduce wood to a flour-like powder.

Demolition of Church Street historic home raises concerns

NEWPORT — The demolition of the historic home at 46 Church St., built in 1779, is receiving a lot of public comment on a local website, much of it negative, but the project went through a public process involving the city’s Historic District Commission, the historic preservation planner and building officials for more than two years.

Sean Napolitano, the owner of A-1 Roofing and Construction on Bliss Road, bought the property in June 2016 with the intent of restoring it under the city’s historic preservation standards and received partial demolition permits.

As work was done on the building since then, major problems kept coming up. For example, the workers discovered the beams under the first floor, as well as the sheathing of the home, was severely damaged by powderpost beetles and water infiltration.

Bark- and wood-boring insects rank among the top destroyers of trees and shrubs. One tactic that pest control officials have used to fend off these insects is to halt their entrance to a country at international ports. Recently, however, native species of wood-boring beetles have expanded their range within their normal biogeographic regions, leaving questions about how they got there and how to deal with the damage in their wake.

A group of Italian researchers led by entomologist Davide Rassati at the University of Padua found that two types of beetles, in the families Cerambycidae and Scolytinae, could travel within a single country thanks to stowing away on ships between ports, and they can easily travel from local forests to a port and be exported to anywhere outbound ships are traveling. Their research was published in December in the Journal of Economic Entomology.

Wood-boring beetles are difficult to control once an infestation has begun. Therefore, prevention is the best management method. Post infestation, fumigation is carried out but for fumigation to be effective, your whole house would need to be tented and infused with sulfuryl fluoride, or you would need to take the shelves to a company that has a fumigation vault.

Glasgow rat problem ‘alarmingly high’ as city sees six times more callouts than Edinburgh

Glasgow City Council were asked to deal with rats both inside houses and at street level more than 14,000 times since the start of 2016, a freedom of information request has revealed.

The numbers are staggering when compared to similar statistics in Edinburgh with the council receiving 17 complaints in connection with rats on average every day.

The capital only dealt with 1,800 callouts connected to street-level rats in the same time period, compared to Glasgow’s near 11,000 requests.

Govanhill in the south of the city is by far the worst affected area of Glasgow by rats and is home to a third of the worst thirty rat-infested streets.

Allison Street in the area had 68 complaints about rats in living areas, almost double the next highest, Cathcart Street, also in Govanhill.

‘More rats than residents’ at one NYCHA development in East Harlem, tenants say

EAST HARLEM, Manhattan — Rats are running under parked cars at the Washington Houses in a city parking lot in East Harlem. Some in the area say rats take over at night and even during the day.

“Every night there are dozens under my car,” said Theodore Barikdar, who has a minivan.

Barikdar was assigned a parking space right next to a pile of trash, he said. The area become a feeding ground for dozens of sewer rats.

He is not alone. Luis Jimenez and Manuel Medina say they park their cars in the same NYCHA parking lot.

“I’ve had rats walking on top of my car,” said Jimenez.

The rat problem is a health hazard, Washington Houses Tenant Association President Claudia Perez said.

“It’s not just this building, it’s 14 buildings,” Perez said. “I can show you huge rat holes in every single one of these buildings.”

Combating the locusts invasion

Locusts are related to grasshoppers and the two insects look similar. However, locust behavior can be something else entirely. Locusts are sometimes solitary insects with lifestyles much like grasshoppers. But locusts have another behavioral phase called the gregarious phase where they move with other locusts collectively and attacks on crop field.

Locusts are found on all continents except Antarctica and North America. They are most common in Africa and Asia.

Locust swarms devastate crops and cause major agricultural damage and attendant human misery – shortage and starvation. Locust outbreaks have the potential to affect the livelihoods of one in ten people on the planet.

Desert locust plagues may threaten the economic livelihood of one-tenth of the world’s humans.

Desert locusts affect 20 percent of the world’s land surface, scientists say.

Desert locusts live in barren regions that see rain only rarely. They eke out an existence alone when times are tough. When the rains come, they breed like crazy. Then things dry up, and hordes of locusts are forced to gather around diminishing patches of vegetation.

These massive swarms travel as many as 160 kilometers (100 miles) a day.

KUWAIT CITY, May 1: Despite the attempts of the Public Authority for Agriculture Affairs and Fish Resources (PAAAFR) to fight the swarms of locusts coming from Saudi Arabia towards the Wafra farms, it looks like the yellow locusts have won the battle and caused heavy material losses to many farms, reports Al-Qabas daily. The swarms invaded the farms about three days ago and destroyed tomatoes, cloves and other products and even attempted to invade the ‘hydroponic farms’ causing material losses that could have negative consequences on the vegetables and cattle market due to hike in prices of products.

‘Avoid using pesticides for killing locusts in Jaisalmer’

JAIPUR: Chief wildlife warden of Rajasthan has written to the state agriculture department to avoid using pesticides for killing locusts in Jaisalmer which in turn is harming the Great Indian Bustard (GIB) which regularly feed on these insects. 

The wildlife department is also taking the help of scientists from Wildlife Institute of India (WII) to find a pesticide which just targets the locusts and doesn’t harm any other animal or bird. 

The letter (a copy of which is with TOI) states that pesticides being sprayed in Jaisalmer district to kill locusts has become a threat to the GIB particularly in Ramdeora, Lokarki and nearby areas since the state bird regularly feeds on this insect thus there is a threat to the health of GIBs which consume them. 

The letter further urges that not only the use of harmful pesticides should be avoided but suitable taxa-specific biopesticides may be utilised for overcoming the locust’s problem without affecting the GIB.

Spraying with solutions of arsenic and overturning the soil can destroy the eggs but this is extremely lethal.
