Gerbils are popular pets in the United States. Gerbils are often kept by young children because they have a great deal of character. However, in recent times, these large gerbils have caused farmers big problems due to the amount of grain they hoard and the damage they do through their constant burrowing.

Gerbils keep themselves busy by digging and they also like to gnaw.

After farmers have planted, the animals move into the lands and begin digging out the seeds. But they do even more damage later, chewing freshly germinated plants and severing them from the seeds. Outbreaks tend to be more frequent during successive wet seasons.

With the grain planting season on hand, farmers have to be aware of the imminent threat posed by gerbils to newly planted crops. Gerbils are a menace to grain farmers and may cause serious crop damage by digging up planted seed or eating germinating seed.

With the advent of the 2018/2019 summer grain production season, South African producers need to be aware of the potential losses caused by gerbils to newly planted crops.

It is essential that grain farmers start implementing precautionary measures as soon as possible, said Dr Gerhard Verdoorn, CropLife SA’s operations and stewardship manager.

Registered rodenticides listed in CropLife’s gerbil management plan must be placed in bait stations or in gerbil burrows, he cautioned. Scattering rodenticides on the surface of the soil is not only illegal, but ineffective.

“The animals start digging out seed just after planting, but the most damage is caused when seeds are germinating. This is probably due to seed being soft and more palatable than when newly planted,” he said.

Reports of 40 000 gerbils per hectares were not uncommon, said Verdoorn.

Bedbugs invading theaters

Just the thought of bedbugs is enough to make most people’s skin crawl, and finding them at the theater when you need some relaxation and fun time with your family and friends can really be annoying.

Bed bugs are nocturnal eaters, and will rarely bite humans during the day. But a movie theater is an ideal place for them to crawl even at day time due to the darkness while a movie is being played. Health department confirms bed bugs at Marion movie theater

November 15th 2018

MARION, Ind. (WTHR) – The Grant County Health Department has confirmed investigators found evidence of bed bugs at a Marion movie theater.

The department told our partners at the Marion Chronicle-Tribune the theater tested positive during an inspection last Friday. An Indianapolis pest control company found bed bug casings in one of four theaters tested at the AMC Classic theater and bed bug eggs in one chair of another theater in the building.

The company treated the chairs where evidence of bed bugs was found, as well as the surrounding seats.

The Chronicle-Tribune reported Tuesday night no other signs of bed bugs were found anywhere else in the theater. That leads inspectors to believe someone with an infestation at home brought the bugs into the theater.

Monday night, a Marion woman told Eyewitness News she was bitten all over her back and arms after going to a movie at the AMC Classic theater.

“About halfway through, she said she felt like something bite her,” recalled Dylan Stephenson, whose girlfriend, Adriana Wisner, was the victim of the bites.

Wisner and Stephenson said they left halfway through the movie. Now, they’re concerned they may have brought the bugs home.

Bedbugs ruin family outing at Phoenix movie theater

There is another report of bedbugs making their way into a Phoenix movie theater.

It is not the first time this has happened at a movie theater, and in this particular incident, the mother isn’t thrilled with the lack of communication from the theater involved.

The mother, who did not want to be identified on camera, said her family went to an afternoon showing of Paddington Bear at the Harkins Theatres at Christown Mall. During the course of the movie, she said her kids started itching inside the theater, and it was only after the movie that they put their heads together and figured out what it was.

The woman said she did receive a full refund on the tickets to the movie, but wanted to spread awareness around the Valley.

Gnawing rats causing gas blasts

Couple dies in explosion after rat nibbles tube

EZHUKON: A middle aged couple died in a gas cylinder explosion at Ezhukon in Kollam on Tuesday. They were identified as Yohannan and his wife Annamma. The cylinder exploded after a rat nibbled the tube connected from the cylinder to the gas stove. The couple did not give much care even after a foul smell emanated. Fire broke out after they lit the stove without noticing the leak. The accident happened Tuesday morning at 5.30 am. A big explosion occurred when the couple were in the kitchen. Though the seriously injured were taken to the hospital, both died at 3 pm.

Dubai housemaid dies in gas explosion, and a rat’s to blame

Dubai Police confirmed on Thursday that a housemaid was killed following a gas cylinder explosion.

The explosion was a result of a rat tampering with the gas cylinder tubes in a kitchen of a villa in Dubai.

Captain Mohammed Ali Al Qasim, head of the criminal engineering department at Dubai Police, said that “the villa’s owner had warned his maids against using the stove in the kitchen after smelling a gas leak”.

However, one of the maids entered the kitchen and ignited one of the burners, leading to the explosion that damaged the kitchen’s walls, which eventually collapsed into her colleague’s room. The maid was killed instantly, while the fire from the explosion caused moderate burns to the other maid.

Devastating locusts invasion

Locusts have probably been an enemy of man ever since he began to grow crops.

Locusts do damage by eating the leaves, flowers, fruits, seeds, bark and growing-points, and also by breaking down trees because of their weight when they settle in masses, and sometimes even by spoiling plants with their excrete.

Large swarms of locusts can completely strip the foliage and stems of plants such as forbs and grasses. Some species consume a variety of plants, while others have a more specific diet. 

There are as many as 80 million locusts in a swarm. They wipe out massive areas and affect entire economies.

Locust swarms devour every crop in their path. Locusts eat plant material.

Each locust can eat its weight in plants each day, so a swarm of such size would eat 423 million pounds of plants every day.

Locusts in Penal village destroy crops

A plague of locusts has swept into the village of Mendez Trace in Penal, destroying hundreds of crops and plants. Residents said four days ago they started seeing the locusts on their crops and the numbers increased within a few hours.

“In a short time they destroyed hundreds of crops,” one resident said, adding that he had to run inside for cover,

But another man, who recently moved into the area, said, “Some of them even got inside our homes. We could not go outside.

These past few days were something else. This is the first time I have experienced something like this.”

Others said it was the second locust infestation within the last two years.

Farmers worried as locusts invade Marsabit, Isiolo and Turkana

Tree locusts have invaded parts of Marsabit, Isiolo and Turkana counties.

A swarm has occupied about 2,000 square kilometers (494,210 acres) in Merti sub-county in Isiolo, while residents of North Horr, Marsabit, have reported that the pests disrupted classes in some schools last week.

Pupils learned under trees as efforts to drive them away were futile.

Farmers in Marsabit resorted to hiring youths to scare away locusts that ate maize and beans on their farms.

The pests have also invaded parts of Turkana East sub-county that borders Samburu, Baringo and West Pokot.

The locusts invade trees and shrubs, unlike desert locusts which are more dangerous and feeds on grass and crops.

Allium Leafminer – A New Invasive Pest

The allium leafminer (also known as the onion leafminer) came originally from Central and Eastern Europe, where it’s a serious pest on leeks, onions, and chives. It has been spreading outwards in the last 20 years and is now found throughout Europe. Later, it was spotted in Lancaster County, PA, in December 2015, making it the first confirmed infestation in the western hemisphere.

The pest is seen targeting onions, leeks, garlic, chives, shallots, as well as green onions, with leeks being described as the most damaged host.

Leaf mining takes place mostly from April to May and from October to November. However, the damage is most obvious later, once rotting has set in, so is usually seen in overwintering leeks between December and February, and in onions in June.

One of the first symptoms you will notice on plants is wavy, curly, and distorted leaves, upon closer inspection, you will be able to see puncture marks along the sides of the leaves toward the distal end.

The fly larvae mine the plant leaves and move toward the bulb and leaf sheaths where they pupate. Exactly where they pupate in the plant may vary depending on bulb and leaf size. To check for larvae, the plants must be pulled out of the ground and the leaves pulled back.

Controls sought for pest threatening Black Dirt onions

PINE ISLAND – Preliminary research has begun to identify controls for the allium leafminer, the new pest that poses a threat to Orange County’s signature onion crop, but the battle is far from over.

That is the message growers heard Tuesday at Cornell Cooperative Extension’s annual onion school, a day-long event held at the Pine Island Fire Department.

“The question everybody has that we can’t answer yet is ‘Will it cause economic damage to the bulb onion crop?’ ″ said Brian Nault, a professor of entomology at Cornell University, explaining the pest is still getting established.

“So far,” he continued, “seeded and transplanted onions have escaped, which is not the case with garlic, leeks, spring onions and chives where we have seen as much as 75 percent damage.”

Cornell’s team is working in tandem with a team at Penn State. The two universities received $325,000 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture last year to study controls for the leafminer over the 2019 and 2020 growing seasons.

Starbucks fined £12,000 for mice infestation in cafe visited by Blair

Coffee giant Starbucks was fined £12,000 after one of its cafes, once visited by Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, was infested with mice.

An environment health officer with 17 years’ experience was hit by a “strong smell of mice” and recurring scenes of filth and mice droppings and staining’s during an inspection at a Starbucks in the heart of London’s West End in November last year.

Mouse droppings were found next to spoons, knives, cups, Clingfilm and boxes of biscuits and coffee that were about to be used, London’s City of Westminster magistrates heard.

Westminster Council decided to prosecute after the state of two storerooms and a serving area at the Villiers Street cafe in the arches of Charing Cross station raised alarm.

One mousetrap in a storeroom “appeared to be weighty and may have had a mouse in it” and the rodent had left “greasy smears”, Felicia Davy for Westminster Council told the court.

Starbucks, which has more than 530 stores and 8,000 partners in the UK, pleaded guilty to four counts of food safety and hygiene breaches.

AGRA: Sana screamed and her heart skipped a beat or two when she noticed a rodent, as fat as a rabbit, gnawing at her half-eaten cheese sandwich in a first class AC waiting room at Agra Cantonment railway station.  

Not only leftovers, the fat rodents also nibble at cables and wires of the trains, bringing them to a halt and leading to delays. While spotting of pests in cooked food of railway canteen  is  a common phenomenon.

Speaking to TOI, SK Srivastava, assistant commercial manager of Agra division said, “The current service of pest and rodent control will terminate soon. Therefore, the railway is issuing new tender of Rs 24 lakh for next four years of service.”

Srivastava also talked about the damages that the rodents are causing. “Rodent nibble at train berths, electrical cables, luggage of passengers. Apart from that, we also receive complaints of pest problem in train coaches. So, to maintain hygiene, we outsource pest and rodent control service.”

Southern Railway to pay Rs 27,350 for rat damaging bag on train

Chennai: A city consumer forum has directed Southern Railway to pay a compensation of Rs 27,350 to a passenger whose suitcase was damaged by a rodent.

The passenger has the below words to say about his experience on rodents in railways:

On reaching the destination, Devadas found his Samsonite suitcase was cut open in the bottom for almost 6 inches by rats during the travel.  “I purchased the suitcase for Rs 12,600 only recently. And, due to lack of maintenance of the compartments the rats caused damages to the suitcase”, he said.

Tea is the most popular and celebrated beverage which has been enjoyed throughout the ages.

Arunachal: Mealy bug attack hits tea farmers hard in Siang valley

Mormon crickets, crop-destroying insects

Mormon crickets are voracious eaters and have sharp, powerful mandibles for chewing many kinds of plants. Their mandibles can easily chew into fruit. Feeding damage increases as the nymphs mature.

Mormon crickets will strip trees of foliage and feed on the directly on the fruit.

The common name is derived from this pest’s destruction of the crops of Mormon settlers in the mid-1800s.

It is native throughout western North America in sagebrush areas, rangelands, and grasslands, and is subject to population outbreaks that cause result in serious agricultural losses.

SPARKS – Rural Nevada’s arid landscape is covered in snow but it won’t be long before bugs start hatching.

The Nevada Department of Agriculture, in cooperation with USDA’s Plant Protection and Quarantine program, is conducting a series of public meetings on proposed Mormon cricket and grasshopper population management this week.

“Mormon cricket and grasshopper populations have been on the rise for the last couple of years,” Jeff Knight, state entomologist for the NDA, said. “Significant numbers were found north of Reno in the Red Rock area, south of Winnemucca, near Paradise Valley and in and around Austin last year.”

SALEM, Ore. (AP) — An infestation of voracious Mormon crickets in the Arlington area of north-central Oregon has residents scrambling to protect farm fields and home gardens.

Ione resident Alison Ogden said people in Arlington have spent thousands of dollars battling the bugs on their own over the past couple of weeks.

“Some people don’t have air conditioning and can’t even open their windows for fear the bugs will enter homes,” she said in an email to the Capital Press.

Ogden said she and her husband, Jarrod, farm a few miles east of town, and anxiously check the crickets’ presence every day. She said the pests could do significant damage to their crops. “And because we have millions of leaf cutter bees working in the alfalfa seed fields, spraying insecticide is not an option,” she wrote.
