PESTS IN RESTAURANTS

They got a pest control contract and even then, the pests dared to enter their restaurant! Such a terrible experience!

Imagine on a weekend you are out with your friends to munch at this fancy restaurant. There in your sight goes on the pests roaming around. The next you do is you never ever visit the restaurant again.

Despite the best efforts, the restaurant owners could end up with pests in their kitchen or any kitchen from a restaurant.

Rodents such as mice and rats are the bugbear of every restaurant owner. Sometimes cleaning is just not enough in the restaurant business. There are many ways that a restaurant can develop a problem with mice and with rats and those ways are not always based on cleanliness. The fact is that water and standing water can be just as bad as food or debris.

Contrary to what you may have heard, there is no acceptable or allowable number or amount of pests in a food facility. Pests are strictly illegal in all areas of the establishment, which includes the kitchen, food or equipment storage rooms, restrooms, employee locker and break rooms, customer service and seating areas, trash storage areas and exterior premises. They’re illegal not because they are unsightly, but mainly because they are known carriers of numerous dangerous, disease-causing microorganisms that can be transmitted to your food, the food contact surfaces etc. potentially causing a serious food poisoning. They also contaminate the food with their hair, fecal droppings, urine, saliva, body parts and general filth.

Rats and mice are attracted by food supplies and do not venture far from their shelter or nesting sites, so in a large facility will nest close to accessible food stores. Rats and mice are capable of a rapid increase in population given an abundant food supply; due to the number of litters they can produce and the time to maturity, shelter from predators and benign environmental conditions inside a building.

Not only can they transmit serious diseases, but they can also close a restaurant down fast! Worldwide, rats and mice are known to spread over 35 diseases, according to the Centers for Disease Control. These diseases can be spread to humans directly, through handling of rodents, through contact with rodent feces, urine, or saliva, or through rodent bites. Diseases carried by rodents can also be spread to humans indirectly, through ticks, mites or fleas that have fed on an infected rodent. Cockroaches are proven or suspected carriers of the organisms that cause infections salmonellosis, typhoid fever, cholera, gastroenteritis, dysentery, leprosy, plague etc.

A heavy infestation of cockroaches or rodents will sometimes give the establishment a recognizable musty odor. If you detect this odor or any out of the ordinary odor, be wary about patronizing this establishment. A restaurant and any food facility should always smell clean and of fresh food. Anything else could mean something is wrong.

All types of food facilities, even the newest, nicest, most expensive, elegant restaurant can become infested with vermin. It is fairly common because a restaurant especially is an ideal environment for cockroaches, rats, mice, flies etc. to thrive.

Health inspectors order food facilities to eliminate pest problem countless times. If a food establishment or facility cannot fully eliminate the pests, the inspector is duty-bound to suspend their permit and order them closed and or take legal action and have the local district or city attorney file a criminal misdemeanor complaint against the business and its owner(s). A permit may be suspended immediately, depending on the severity of the infestation. Some jurisdictions may also issue immediate fines or penalties in the form of a ticket or citation.

Customer served COCKROACH in her meal as Dudley restaurant owner is fined for infestation

A restaurant was found to be infested by cockroaches after a customer was served one of the pests in her meal.

Shanti Devi Sharma, director of the company which ran Isha’s at Stourbridge Road, Lye, has been fined £9,000 after pleading guilty to nine offences under food safety and hygiene regulations following the incident in March last year.

Dudley magistrates heard that environmental health officers carried out an inspection of the restaurant, after receiving the customer complaint.

And they discovered cockroaches in the kitchen and beneath a chest freezer – sparking the premises to be closed immediately.

This was subsequently backed by a court order, which forced the closure of the business for six weeks until the infestation was eradicated.

The yellow crazy ants- a major environmental and agricultural pest

Native to Africa, the yellow crazy ant has a long body and very long legs and antennae. Its name comes from its erratic walking style and frantic movements, especially when disturbed. But what’s really crazy about these ants is their odd attraction to electrical equipment. It’s estimated that every year, crazy ants cause more than $146 million in electrical damage. These ants, when electrocuted, release a scent (pheromone), providing a signal to other ants to rush to the scene to find the ‘attacker.’

Yellow crazy ants also damage natural environments, affect the horticulture industry, and cause skin and eye irritations.

The yellow crazy ant is listed as one of the world’s 100 worst invasive alien species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

Knowing what these ants have done elsewhere gives us plenty of reasons to be worried if they aren’t eradicated.

The yellow crazy ant was introduced by accident to Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean about 70 years back. It quickly got a foothold and started to take over. The devastating effects of the supercolonies on the island are readily apparent. These ants can overpower reptiles and coconut crabs. An estimated 20 million red crabs have been killed by these ants, about 30% of the island’s entire population! The ants succeed in their killing sprees by injecting an acid into the eye of their victims. The acid is poisonous to the red crabs, and it blinds them leaving them to starve to death or be killed by predators. It was also introduced to Australia accidentally.

Crazy ants are highly adaptable, living in both moist and dry habitats. They establish their nests in the vicinity of trees and plants, inside the rotten wood, under rock and trash, in the soil and in the debris and residue of building standing for a long time. Crazy ants cannot survive extremely cold climates and may invade houses and buildings when the weather changes.

Crazy ants are omnivorous, feeding on both dead and living insects, honeydew produced from insects, fruits, plant secretions, seeds and a variety of household food items such as sweets, meats, grease and liquids.

The ants can be painful and dangerous to people and animals. They spray formic acid when disturbed, and it can be particularly painful if there is contact with the eyes. Spraying can cause skin burns and eye irritation in humans. The ants can kill a large animal in a mass attack. These ants are described as “scavenging predators”. They eat not only small isopods, myriapods, earthworms, mollusks, arachnids, and insects, but also large land crabs, birds, mammals, and reptiles.

Invasive ‘crazy’ ant species discovered in New South Wales for first time in more than a decade

An invasive ant species capable of causing blindness and decimating crops has been discovered infesting the CBD of a town on the north coast of New South Wales.

Queensland resident and cane worker Frank Teodo said he was temporarily blinded by yellow crazy ants.

The Edmonton landholder said the ants wreak havoc on the environment, lifestyles and the health of people and their pets.

“I had them on my property for quite some time,” he said.

“They build up in sufficient numbers, I couldn’t control them — I had a cocktail of chemicals around my house that would have knocked out anything.

“They don’t actually bite, but they spray formic acid, so they can blind your pets, they’ll blind you if you get them near your eyes.

Invasive crazy ants disrupt pollination in pumpkin

There is yet another reason to be worried about invasive yellow crazy ants — these aggressive predators of native fauna also disrupt pollination in pumpkin plants causing crop loss finds a recent study published in the journal Biological Invasions. This is the first time that this has been recorded in any plant.

Pollination is vital for fruit formation. However, in the traditionally bee-pollinated pumpkin patches of northern Kerala’s Kasargod district, farmers now hand-pollinate their pumpkin patches, complaining of crop loss otherwise. Scientists at the Central University of Kerala decided to investigate why pumpkin pollinators here were failing.

Ineffective control options adopted to prevent the crazy ant infestation include ant baits, dusts and perimeter granules and sprays. But the ants and many other insects have become immune to the content used in these products. Moreover, the dust powder is insecticide formulated which is dangerous to humans as well as pests. Temporary relief from using products with pyrethroid insecticides is achieved, but re-application is necessary every two to three months.

Cukes in danger – Cucumber beetle menace

Cukes are the mouthwatering fruits enjoyed by all. But did you all know that a pest is named after this fruit?

Yes, it’s the “cucumber beetle” know after attacking the cucumber plant.

There are two common species of cucumber beetles – the striped beetle and the spotted beetle, that you may find in your garden which proves to be problems to the grown cucumber.

The adult striped beetles are bright-yellow and have three broad, black stripes running down the length of their wing covers and are 1/4-inch long. Spotted beetles are greenish-yellow with black spots on the wing covers. Striped and spotted cucumber beetles can cause serious losses in cucumbers, muskmelons, and watermelons.

Cucumber beetles are a major concern to muskmelon and cucumber growers because they vector the bacteria that causes a disease, bacterial wilt of cucurbits.

Both species overwinter as adults in weedy areas and emerge in spring to mate and lay eggs. Though these newly emerged beetles don’t feed very much before breeding and laying eggs, their larvae burrow into the ground and feed on plant roots for several weeks.

Once these underground larvae complete their pupation, they emerge as adults. This is the generation that causes the most damage to gardens.

Adult beetles chew ragged holes in plant leaves and may consume entire cucumber blossoms. Unfortunately, newly planted, young seedlings can be consumed quickly.

Striped cucumber beetle is known to cause major losses in cucurbit crops including cantaloupe, cucumbers, squash, and pumpkins. Because the beetle transmits the bacteria Erwinia tracheiphila, also known as bacterial wilt, managing damage caused by the pest requires a multipronged approach.

According to Shelby Fleischer from the Department of Entomology at Pennsylvania State University, adult beetles overwinter and feed on both the above- and below-ground portions of cucurbits including plant tissue, leaves, and roots. If you are growing large-flowered crops such as pumpkins or winter squash, beetles also will aggregate inside the flowers.

Striped and spotted cucumber beetles attack a variety of cucurbit crops, including winter and summer squash, cucumber and watermelon. While cucumber beetle larvae feed on cucurbit roots, adult beetles cause more economically important damage. Striped cucumber beetles are specialists on cucurbits while spotted cucumber beetles feed on other plants in addition to cucurbits.

Termites: The wood destroyer

 

 

Termites have been around for more than 240 million years. Homeowners suffer average $7,900 of damage before realizing they have termites. Termites release an estimated 176 billion pounds of “greenhouse gas” per year. Termites not only damage woods but now they are also damaging wires and cables

Generally, termites live in trees, lumber, soil, and wooden structures.

The diet of the termites is made of organic fiber, cellulose, plants like grass etc. The cellulose is the one which provides the termites with nutrients which they need to survive since they cannot digest the cellulose directly; therefore, they have other microorganisms like the protozoans and bacteria in their stomach which helps them to break the cellulose so that it can be digested by their metabolism.

Do termites get attracted to wood?

Yes, termites get attracted to wood they eat wood in houses, utility poles, furniture, dying trees etc.

Since wood is difficult to consume and digest, termites are equipped with special mouthparts for chewing wood and other forms of cellulose which cannot be digested directly.

In many numbers of cases termites invasion cannot be noticed, once the colonies are built up then termites can stay for a long period of time without being noticed.

Residents said the spraying of chemicals around the base where termites were spotted was a relief as they feared the trees would crash. In the past week, one person died while another was injured in tree crashes.

Super termites’ have moved into the Midlands. They can eat your home 10 times faster

The dreaded “super termite” has come to the Midlands.

Rodney Dorn of Columbia-based Modern Exterminating was inspecting a Lexington County house in June when he came across a colony of termites that were different than those native to the area. He took a sample to Dr. Eric Benson, an entomology professor at Clemson, and Benson confirmed it was a Formosan subterranean termite — colloquially referred to as a “super termite.”

Super termites earn their nickname by aggressively eating through the wood. In under a month, a colony can chew through a foot-long 2X4, according to an article from Pestworld.org.

“They eat about 10 times faster than our eastern subterranean termite (which is) what we have here,” said Modern Exterminating owner Glenn Matthews.

While termites native to the Midlands often have colonies in the thousands, super termites have colonies in the millions, according to an article from the University of Florida. Super termites, which can burrow underground 300 feet from a hive, are also exceptionally difficult to kill.

Super termites are an invasive species from Asia that were introduced into America in the 1950s, most likely after military hardware — such as wooden pallets infected with Formosan termites — returned home from the Korean War, Benson said.

As termites are resistance to pesticides, they do not get affected by the pesticides.

You see that black trail and following it you reach your kitchen. Then you reach to the rack placed with sugar container and the container seems to be filled less of sugar but more of these pesky creatures!

You know well which creatures I am talking about!

Yes, those are the ants!

Ants usually live in wood or soil outside our house, and only march into our house to gather food. On the other hand, ants may live inside our house as well.

Ants love sugar! They’re attracted to sweet substances but are an omnivorous insect, which means they’ll eat any type of edible substance they can find. They also need water to survive. They enter different structures in order to scavenge for food.

There are many species of nuisance ants that invade our homes – they come in all different sizes and colors.

Carpenter ant infestations often go unnoticed until it is a costly situation to correct. The damage caused by carpenter ants is distinct although it is often confused with termite damage. While termites feed on the cellulose found in the wood, carpenter ants excavate galleries or tunnels in decaying wood. Contrary to popular belief, carpenter ants do not actually eat the wood. Rather, they hollow it out to nest inside, which may result in structural damage.

Rotted wood in window frames and similar spots provides an ideal home for acrobat ants and other ant species. Tiny grease ants may seem to appear out of nowhere and sneak into food containers. Rather, they are appearing out of tiny gaps and cavities in the kitchen, including spaces behind kitchen cabinets. Such nests can be difficult to find.

When one ant finds food or water they will lay down a chemical trail that guides other worker ants to the source – you will see trails of ants going back and forth from the food or water.

These creatures seem too small but the menace they cause is huge!

Just in time for the winter season, a new group of visitors has descended on South Florida. But they’re not friendly tourists.

An invasive species of yellow ants (Plagiolepis alluaudi) has arrived in the Riverland neighborhood of Fort Lauderdale, researchers at the University of Florida have discovered.

These types of ants, natives of Madagascar, have never been seen outside of Hawaii in the United States, according to the experts.

“By the time you detect them, the colonies are so big and spread out that they are hard to control,” said Thomas Chouvenc, UF assistant professor of urban entomology based at the Fort Lauderdale Research and Education Center.

They’re also difficult to get rid of.

Two bites of a muesli bar was all it took for Deanne Cook to feel like she was on fire.

The Karratha resident quickly realized it was not just the snack she was eating but dozens of tiny ants.

“It was like I was on fire. I was in the shower sobbing,” she said.

“I didn’t even knowing what had happened until I went back to the pantry and saw the carnage.

A colony of ants had attacked her food, in some cases chewing through sealed packets.

Have you ever heard the rats and the mice taking admission in school??

Shocking right? But yes, rats and mice do take admission in schools, not for the getting educated but to spread nuisance.

The schools have the responsibilities when it comes to the education of students but the schools are also responsible for protecting the health and safety of their students.

Rat infestation closes Congdon Park school

A rat infestation has closed the eastern Duluth Congdon Park Elementary School and its grounds for the summer.

The rodents have been spotted entering the drainage system under the gym addition of the school. Hillside burrow entrances have also been found at the back of the building, according to the Duluth school district.

The closure will allow pest control and district staff to clear the area where the rats have been living and eating for some time, including inside the school’s composting bin.

“They enter into — I don’t want to call it a rat buffet — but they had plenty of food, shelter, and water and took up residence,” district facilities manager Dave Spooner said of the composting bin and the burrows.

No rats were found inside the school, he said, but the closure of the building and its grounds make it easier to solve the problem.

The infestation was discovered toward the end of the school year, and pest control workers began addressing it with traps inside lockboxes. So far, about five rats per day have been trapped. Pesticide bait boxes will be set near the drainage system and burrow entrances Friday. The method is compliant with Environmental Protection Agency and Minnesota Department of Health guidelines, district officials said.

Rat infestation forces closure of Duluth elementary school

A colony of rats is wreaking havoc at Duluth’s Congdon Park Elementary, prompting district officials to close the school and its playground for the summer.

Since the unwelcome discovery, pest control workers have trapped about five rodents per day near the foundation and drainage system underneath the school gym, said district facilities manager Dave Spooner.

“We’re working to remove them before they can get into the building itself,” Spooner said in a prepared statement. “Having the building and grounds unoccupied will allow us the flexibility to take steps necessary to make that happen.”

The school is located at 3116 E. Superior St., not far from Glensheen mansion.

Food sources that might attract the vermin have been removed.

The school’s composting bin likely played a role. “They enter into — I don’t want to call it a rat buffet — but they had plenty of food, shelter, and water and took up residence,” Spooner told the Duluth News Tribune.

Pesticide bait boxes — called the “least toxic method” — have been laid near burrow entrances located in the hillside at the back of the building to help eradicate the infestation. District officials said those efforts are compliant with state Department of Health and Environmental Protection Agency guidelines.

Signs will be posted around the property to inform neighbors the traps are being used.

Students were released for summer vacation last week, but administrators had remained on the grounds. Scheduled enrichment activities will move to Ordean-East Middle School.

Students complain of rat infestation in high school

School officials in Fayette County say they have been trying to exterminate rodents at Sandy Creek High School, but they’re still a problem after more than a month.

One student told Channel 2 Action News that she saw about 40 rats at one time in the field house where student-athletes work out.

A dead rat was found by a student in the weight training room, the news station reported.

The athletes told Channel 2 they are still being forced to work out in the field house, despite all of the rats running around.

Pest nuisance in poultry farms

About 5k million chickens are being raised every year as a source of food, both meat and eggs of chicken. The commercial egg laying industry is comprised of over 273 million laying hens, of which about 237 million produce table eggs, the eggs one buys at the supermarket and the rest for fertile hatching eggs as a replacement for the laying flocks.

But the huge poultry industry has to face the nuisance caused certain insects!

Litter beetles are common pests in poultry houses and are well known for eating feed, disturbing chickens, harboring diseases and causing damage to the poultry housing. If the infestation in the house is heavy enough, beetles are even known to kill weakened chickens in their search for moisture and food. In addition to directly affecting the birds, beetles can cause significant damage to poultry houses – it is common for them to do damage to wood and insulation while searching for food and place to pupate. Litter beetles are nocturnal insects, have no natural enemies in the environment, and because of their long association with birds are attracted to ammonia.

In the past few years, litter beetles have become the most serious pest affecting several types of poultry production systems. Entomologists who work with arthropod pests of poultry give priority to litter beetles because they have a high reproductive rate, are difficult to control, are vectors of disease, cause considerable damage to insulation in poultry facilities, and may migrate from litter disposal sites to urban housing areas where they are a nuisance. They also may consume considerable amounts of poultry feed if they are very numerous.

Because the beetles feed on poultry carcasses and because poultry may feed on them, litter beetles are mechanical vectors of several diseases, including Marck’s disease, avian influenza, salmonella, fowl pox, coccidiosis, botulism and New Castle disease. They also are reservoirs of and vectors of cecal worms and tapeworms.

Adult litter beetles are black or dark reddish-brown and about 1/4 inch long.   Larvae are yellowish-brown and

Poultry lice are small, less than 1/8 inch, wingless insects with chewing mouthparts.

The most common are brown chicken lice and chicken body lice. Less important are large chicken lice, shaft lice, chicken head lice, fluff lice, and several other species which are rarely present.

Egg production is reduced, and heavily infested birds refuse to eat and gradually lose weight. Lice can be observed moving on the skin when feathers are parted, especially around the vent, head, and underwings.

Several kinds of mites attack poultry. The most common are chicken mites and northern fowl mites. Occasionally scaly-leg mites are a problem. Mites vary in size 1/16  to 1/8 inch long and structure, have eight legs, and have mouthparts on the anterior of the body. Usually, there are no clearly defined body divisions.

Chicken mites feed at night. During the day they remain in cracks around roosts and interior portions of poultry houses. At night, they feed on the birds as they roost or nest. Chicken mites are small and grey or yellow in color but darken after filling with blood. Northern fowl mites remain on poultry. They are small and red or brown. Feathers of infested birds are discolored by mite excrement and eggs, and the skin is scabby. Scaly-leg mites burrow under the skin, especially on the lower legs and feet. Legs become scaly, swollen, and exude lymph fluid. Severely infested birds may be crippled or unable to walk.

The common bedbug and several other closely related insects feed on poultry. They are flat, wingless, bloodsucking insects that are about 1/5 inch long when fully grown.  They have a very distinctive pungent odor when crushed. Bedbugs feed at night, hiding and laying eggs behind insulation, in wall cracks, loose boards, nests and other dark areas during the day. At night they move to sleep birds and suck their blood. Small, dark fecal spots around cracks, roosts, and on chicken eggs frequently are observed. Bedbugs can be carried into poultry houses by other birds or into human dwellings where they become a pest of humans.

Other blood-feeding insects or mites that may occasionally be pests of poultry include chigger mites, biting midges, and black flies (turkey gnats). Chiggers may be a problem where turkeys are kept on an open range.  Chiggers often are covered with dense, feathered hairs that give them a velvety appearance. They are often bright red with a figure-eight-shaped body about 1 mm long.
Feeding by the chigger (larvae) creates scabby, reddish lesions that require two to three weeks to heal after the engorged mites leave the bird.
House flies are the most persistent and common fly pest, although other species such as blowflies and little house flies also are present. House flies do not bite poultry, but are severe nuisances, and can spread some poultry diseases. House flies are present because of poultry manure and exposed wet feed, which is ideal feeding and breeding materials.

FDA’s Form 483, observations for the March 26 to April 11, 2018 inspection of Hyde County Egg at 1560 Hyde Park Canal Road in Pantego, NC, documents problems at the production facility for three million hens producing 2.3 million eggs per day.

“Jack” and Peter DeCoster and Quality Egg LLC paid a total of $7 million in fines, and the father and son each served three months jail for allowing their bad eggs to reach the market. Almost 2,000 people were sickened by the recalled DeCoster eggs.

The khapra beetles – Grain destroyer

This insect has put a restriction on import of commodities where it harbors. Quality checks are done to make sure that this insect does not invade a new place. The importer fear khapra beetle, a native Indian insect!

The Khapra Beetle is one of the world’s most destructive pests of stored grain products and seeds. It is considered one of the 100 worst invasive species in the world.

It can cause losses of up to 75% from direct feeding. Infested grain also becomes contaminated with beetles, cast skins and hairs from larvae, which can be a health risk and are difficult to remove from grain storage structures and transport vessels. Handling or consuming contaminated grain and seed products can lead to health issues such as skin irritation and gastrointestinal distress.

Established infestations are difficult to control because the beetle can survive without food for long periods, requires little moisture, hides in tiny cracks and crevices, and is relatively resistant to many insecticides and fumigants.

Khapra beetle can reproduce rapidly in stored products under hot conditions. These beetles tend to crawl into tiny cracks and crevices and remain there for long periods. Adult khapra beetles have wings, but apparently, do not fly.

Khapra beetle will feed on most any dried plant or animal matter. Khapra beetles, however, prefer grain and cereal products, particularly wheat, barley, oats, rye, maize, rice, flour, malt, and noodles. They can feed on products with as little as 2% moisture content and can develop on an animal matter such as dead mice, dried blood, and dried insects.

Khapra beetle infestation can spoil otherwise valuable trade goods and threaten significant economic losses if introduced to a new area. Presence of this pest attracts trade restriction implications. Non-Khapra beetle countries enforce quarantine restrictions on the imported commodities from Khapra beetle countries.

The Khapra beetle has become established in many Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, Asian and African countries. It has also been discovered in North America. United States customs agents have discovered it in isolated infestations on the East and West coast of the United States.

Native to India, hardy beetle will attack almost any kind of stored food product and is hard to kill.

The Pan Am Games are over, but Toronto is still attracting travelers from around the world — some with more legs than others.

U.S border agents at the airport said Tuesday they found a large quantity of Khapra beetles, considered one of the world’s most destructive stored-product pests, in a plastic bag of dried beans.

The bag had been checked in by a passenger from Somalia and was on its way to Atlanta before being intercepted by U.S authorities.

The oval Khapra beetle, about 1.6-3 mm long, is particularly dangerous because, unlike other invasive species, it feeds on healthy grains. And once the insect buries itself inside a shipment, it becomes a haven for bacteria.

In the more severe cases, infested seeds can lose up to 70 percent of their weight.

“They are difficult to control once they are established somewhere because they will attack any kind of stored product,” said Stéphanie Boucher, an entomologist at McGill University. Wheat, barley, rice, flower, pasta and even chocolate, she said, are all seen as food by the beetle.

Managing mice infestations

Excellent hearings, vision, smell and touch have enabled the house mouse to be highly adaptable to homes and indoor buildings. All they need is a 1/4″ opening to be able to enter a house, so they often have access to many places along the house’s perimeter.

The house mouse is a rodent, characteristically having a pointed snout, small rounded ears, and a long naked or almost hairless tail.

House mouse is native to northern Indian subcontinent but is introduced worldwide through association with humans. Highly adaptive, the house mouse has both behavioral and physiological traits such as the ability to survive in buildings and aboard ships, a tendency to move into agricultural fields and leave when the habitat changes, and a rapid rate of reproduction that allow it to thrive wherever humans do. A female mouse can have as many as 12 babies every three weeks, quickly turning a small infestation into a huge problem. This means she could have as many as 150 offspring in a single year!

Mice are generally afraid of rats which often kill and eat them, a behavior known as muricide and it’s the reason why it’s highly unlikely for you to have both species infesting your property. Despite this, free-living populations of rats and mice do exist together.

Mice are mostly crepuscular or nocturnal; they are averse to bright lights and hence most of their feeding occurs after sunset or before sunrise. Nervously active, they are agile climbers and jumpers and are also good swimmers. Their all other senses are extremely sharp. For example, mice can use their whiskers to sense surfaces and air movements, which is why they manage to escape a room as soon as they notice you approaching.

Mice can transport bacteria, such as salmonella, on their bodies and contaminate food sources and kitchen surfaces. Apart from this, they are also responsible for Hantavirus, Leptospirosis, Typhus, Plague, Pox (Rickettsial), etc. Mice can actually carry as many as 200 human pathogens!

Mice eat 15 to 20 times per day. That’s why their nests are located close to food supplies and they have developed a preference to live within human habitats. They can live without water source since the greater amount of food provides them with enough water.

Mice chew through wallboard, cardboard, wood, and even electrical wiring. Mice gnaw at, tunnel through, and nest in insulation. House mice living outdoors eat insects and seeds, including grains, which makes them pests in some areas.

Delaware Waffle House Shut Down After Mouse Video Surfaces

A Delaware Waffle House was closed down after video surfaced of a mouse inside the restaurant.

The viral video showed a mouse eating crumbs below a counter at the Waffle House in Smyrna. The Division of Public Health Office of Food Protection (OFP) received two complaints Tuesday about mice being spotted at the restaurant. OFP inspectors arrived the same day and found evidence of a rodent infestation.

The defoliator moth – Gypsy moth

The tiny critters with hairy bodies feast on leaves and wreak havoc on trees.

Those are the gypsy moths who cause this nuisance.

Gypsy moth caterpillars are easy to identify because they possess characteristics not found on other leaf-feeding caterpillars. They have five pairs of blue dots followed by six pairs of red dots lining the back.

The moth (the adult stage) is usually present in July and August. The male moths are brown and tend to fly in zigzag patterns. The female moths are white or cream colored and do not fly at all. The female lays her eggs in masses, usually on branches and trunks of trees. Egg masses can also be found on patio furniture, recreational vehicles, and other outdoor items. The egg masses are cream or buff in color and about an inch or so in length.  The eggs inside is black and palletlike. Each mass may contain 400-600 eggs.

They are responsible for causing mortality of susceptible host trees. Gypsy moth caterpillars prefer hardwood trees and are known to feed on more than 300 tree species including, but not limited to oak, apple, some poplars, willow, alder, and hawthorn.  The caterpillars are defoliators; they eat the leaves of the host trees. Young caterpillars eat small holes in the middle of the leaves, while older caterpillars feed on the outer edge of the leaf inward. Heavy defoliation by the larval stage of this pest causes stress to the infested host plants. Gypsy moths defoliate millions of acres of trees in the United States yearly; repeated infestations weaken and kill the trees.

It’s almost gypsy moth caterpillar season again, a time of tree defoliation, a variety of other environmental impacts, and caterpillar droppings raining down upon us. And now comes the news that last year’s infestation may have also affected water quality in the region and will likely do so again.

Gypsy moth caterpillars — along with winter moth caterpillars and forest tent caterpillars, but mostly gypsy moths — defoliated about 230,000 acres in Rhode Island last year, according to University of Rhode Island entomologist Heather Faubert, making it the worst defoliation since at least the early 1980s. More than half of the state’s 400,000 forested acres were impacted.

BRIDGEWATER – Dave Hanson is not worried about gypsy moths damaging his crops at Hanson Farm. He’s worried about the trees.

“The white oaks, especially, have been devastated by these insects and there is a concern that there’ll be a lot of dead trees around in the next couple of years,” Hanson said at his farm on Pleasant Street in Bridgewater on Sunday.

Gypsy moths “don’t show a preference for any particular tree other than white oaks. But they’ll eat most anything that they can find their way to the leaves including pine,” Hanson said.

San Antonio has higher roach infestation than New York City, data shows

More than one in four San Antonio households reported roach infestations in 2013, according to U.S. Census Bureau data released last month.

Results from the American Housing Survey, which examined 25 U.S. cities, showed that almost 28 percent of homes here had evidence of roach problems within 12 months of being surveyed.

The billion-dollar bug: Corn rootworm

The corn rootworm is a species of leaf beetle which is considered to be the most widespread and problematic insect pest of corn. It is one of the most devastating insects in North America.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has previously estimated that the damage caused by the pest and costs associated with controlling it typically total $1 billion annually—including approximately $800 million in yield loss and $200 million in treatment expense and hence it is referred as the “billion-dollar bug.”

The corn rootworm rapidly expanded its range in North America and has now spread to various parts of Europe.

Rootworm larvae can complete development only on corn and a few other species of grasses.

Beginning in late May or early June the larvae hatch and begin their single generation life cycle. The larvae are immediately attracted to corn roots by the emission of CO2 from the root tips and begin feeding. Since corn roots are the primary food source for the larvae, extensive damage can occur with a high population of larvae in the soil. After the beetles emerge from the pupal case, they dig their way up to the surface of the soil. Progressive feeding on the roots causes difficulty for the plant to take up moisture and nutrients. Injured roots are also easy entry points for fungi and bacteria that may increase the severity of root and stalk rots and premature death.

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. — A large portion of central Illinois and western Indiana are at high risk for corn rootworm hatches, according to weather-based predictions.

“Rootworm hatches are pretty timely and has been well correlated to heat unit accumulations,” said Sean Evans, Channel North America technology development manager.

Rootworms begin to hatch around 600 soil growing degree units, and once it reaches 750 GDUs, a 50 percent rootworm hatch is typical.

Based on the prediction by insectforecast.com, there was a significant hatch around Memorial Day weekend, when the first alert came out.

A new study explains why biological control of the western corn rootworm has not been efficient

The western corn rootworm continues to be on the rise in Europe. Why attempts to biologically target this crop pest by applying entomopathogenic nematodes have failed, can now be explained by the amazing defense strategy of this insect. In their new study, scientists from the University of Bern, Switzerland, and the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology in Jena, Germany, show that the rootworm larvae are able to sequester plant defense compounds from maize roots in a non-toxic form and can activate the toxins whenever they need them to protect themselves against their own enemies.

Cloth eater moth

Many of us can tell horror stories but none of the told stories can be horrifying than the one where the moths destroy expensive clothes!

What can be more ridiculous than the insects gnawing on your favorite clothes?!

The moths’ larvae feed on woolen carpets, clothing, upholstery, fur and stuffed animals, resulting in holes or patches if left untreated. The larvae of the common clothes moth eat their way through silk, cashmere, wool and other natural fibers containing the protein Keratin. Serious infestations of clothes moths can develop undetected in a home, causing significant damage to clothing, bedding, floor coverings and other articles.

Clothes moths are small, about 1/2-inch, buff-colored moths. Two different species are common in Kentucky, the webbing clothes moth and the casemaking clothes moth. The webbing clothes moth is uniformly buff-colored, whereas the casemaking clothes moth is similar in appearance but has indistinct dark specks on the wings.

Clothes moths are seldom seen because they avoid light. They prefer dark, undisturbed areas such as closets, basements, and attics, and tend to live in corners or in folds of fabric.

The larval stage of clothes moths is creamy-white caterpillars up to 1/2-inch long. Webbing clothes moth larvae spin silken feeding tunnels or patches of webbing as they move about on the surface of fabrics. The casemaking clothes moth encloses itself in a portable case that it drags about wherever it goes.

Damage to articles may consist of irregular surface feeding or holes eaten completely through the fabric. Oftentimes, the larvae leave the material they developed on and can be seen crawling slowly over walls or ceilings. The casemaking clothes moth, in particular, may travel considerable distances from the infested article to spin its cocoon in a protected crack, or along the juncture of a wall and ceiling.

PARLIAMENT House staff were warned today about a gross moth that is infesting the building. The tiny creatures are eating the fabric of our democracy.

SECURITY is tightening around Parliament House in Canberra to counter a threat to the fabric of democracy.

This threat is a particularly voracious moth which gnaws through carpets and clothing and is a sneaky menace.

Known as the casemaking moth, it has become a big enough nuisance for an alert to be issued to all Parliament House workers today.

“Although the outbreak is currently contained, we are asking that all building occupants remain vigilant in keeping an eye out for signs that casemaking moths may be present,” said a notice today from the Department of Parliamentary Services.

“They will usually be found in carpet or clothing, and are very fond of organic fabrics eg wool, silk or cotton materials.

Swamp rats: Pests with orange incisors

Swamp rats also known as orange-toothed species, coypu and nutria are the water-loving rodents that inhabit banks of rivers, lakes, lagoons, marshes, and swamps.

Swamp rats are about 1 meter in length measured from the end of its muzzle to the tip of its round scaly tail. It has short rounded ears and small eyes that are set high on the head to see clearly whilst swimming.

Swamp rats are native to South America but were introduced to the British lands. The Swamp rat’s fur is specially adapted to keep it warm and dry in winter. Long, coarse guard hairs conceal and protect the soft velvety underfur. This under fur is the reason for the Swamp rats breeding in British lands.

Nutria is on the move, eating up marshes in three Louisiana coastal parishes that had been largely untouched by the invasive rodent for almost a decade. That’s the bad news.

Since 2001, Nutrias have converted at least 42 square miles of land into open water, according to Wildlife and Fisheries.

The critters showed a renewed taste in the past year for Jefferson, St. Charles and Cameron parishes. These parishes had three of the six new damage sites noted in the 2017 Swamp rats survey. They hadn’t suffered any new damage since 2009.

Nutria regular favorite, Terrebonne Parish, suffered the lion’s share of the damage in 2017. Terrebonne had 82 percent of the total Swamp rats damage recorded in the latest survey. That’s down from last year’s estimate of 99 percent.

Across all coastal parishes, about 5,900 acres showed varying signs of Nutria damage.

CALABAR, Nigeria—Two days after President Muhammadu Buhari returned home—he had been away in London for 103 days receiving treatment for an undisclosed ailment—he managed to address the country. He looked frail and his speech was slurred in the broadcast early Monday morning, but he told his fellow citizens that he had been “kept in daily touch with events at home.”

“Following the three months’ period of disuse, rodents have caused a lot of damage to the furniture and the air conditioning units,” Buhari’s spokesman, Garba Shehu, told the local newspaper This Day as he explained why the president had not been to his office since his return.

It’s still not clear what variant of the rat was responsible for the damage, there are many in Nigeria: thicket rats, swamp rats, shaggy rats, and more. But the infestation hit an office that was renovated only two years ago.

As the fur demand decreased the Swamp rats is considered as the pests in many areas, destroying aquatic vegetation, marshes, and irrigation systems, and chewing through human-made items, such as tires and wooden house paneling, eroding river banks, and displacing native animals.

Cicadas – The singing insects!

Local country club restaurant shut down after inspector finds evidence of rodents.

A state health inspector temporarily closed the restaurant at an (Orange Country) country club after finding evidence of rodents. The Rio Pinar Country Club restaurant, called Champions Grill on its website, was closed Dec. 6 after the inspector found dozens of rodent droppings in the kitchen and in storage areas.

The club is located at 8600 El Prado Drive in eastern Orange County.

“More than 20 dark fresh moist rodent droppings on shelves in a storage room in a kitchen area,” one of the violations read, according to the report from the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation.

The report noted rodent droppings under a dish machine, behind a cooler and in various other areas on the floor and in a plastic bucket.

There were also scratch marks along walls.

The evidence of rodents was among 31 violations the restaurant at the Rio Pinar Country Club totalled during the inspection, including five high-priority violations

The restaurant was closed for two days until being allowed to reopen Dec. 8 after a follow-up inspection.

Brothers banned from running restaurants after failing to stop rat infestation at their Indian takeway.

The owners of an Indian takeaway have been banned from running future restaurants after failing to keep a rat infestation under control.

The Pioneer Restaurant, run by brothers Mohammed and Zishan Shafiq, was shut down by magistrates last April due to the immediate risks it posed to public health.

Roof Rats around you!

If you hear creeping and crawling noise in your attic while you’re trying to sleep, that could very well be a roof rat or two. And those who have come across this very well know what nuisance they can cause.

Roof rats are referred to as “commensal rats” because of their intimate relationships with humans. Roof rats are dark brown to black in color and can be identified by their large ears and scaly tails that are almost always longer than their bodies.

The roof rat gets its name from its tendency to find shelter in the upper parts of buildings. Once inside, roof rats not only damage materials by gnawing through them, but they also contaminate stored food and serve as vectors of dangerous diseases. A number of bacterial diseases are common to rats, and these include Streptococcus pneumonia, Corynebacterium kutscheri, Bacillus piliformis, Pasteurella pneumotropica, and Streptobacillus moniliformis, to name a few. All of these bacteria are disease-causing agents in humans. In some cases, these diseases are incurable.

Roof rats are thought to be of Southeast Asian origin, but they are now found worldwide, especially in the tropical regions. Roof rats are common in coastal states, seaports because it is the rodent that flourishes in areas inhabited by humans.

The roof rats adapt to a wide range of habitats. In urban areas, they are found around warehouses, residential buildings, and other human settlements. They prefer to live in dry upper levels of buildings, so they are commonly found in attics, wall cavities, false ceilings, cabinets, and shelves, etc. They are also found in agricultural areas, such as in outhouse and crop fields. In the wild, roof rats live in cliffs, rocks, the ground, and trees. Roof rats are also found around fences, ponds, riverbanks, streams, and reservoirs.

Roof rats are prodigious breeders. Females can breed year-round. Within a year, one female may be responsible for up to 40 new rodents!

They feed on the seedlings adversely affecting the ecology of the islands. When consuming these seedlings, these rats reduce the pH of the soil. This harms plant species by reducing nutrient availability in soil, thus decreasing the probability of seed germination. The rats also chew on tree limbs and cause branch dieback.  Damages to irrigation lines are also being reported. They chew through wires and cause fires. Also, they tear the drywall and insulation.

PHOENIX – A resident in Phoenix’s Willo Historic District said she is battling a persistent roof rat problem that may force her to sell her home.

“I knew that there were rats in the Willo district,” said Lisa Benson, who has lived in her home for 20 years and is retired.

The woman said she set traps out of precaution and about four months ago discovered a huge rat caught in a trap in her kitchen.

Roof rats, a common problem for city dwellers, are migrating to California farms and nibbling on everything from avocados to irrigation tubing.

University of California scientists say last year’s wet weather created a perfect environment for the quick-breeding rats to flourish.

Ample rain helped produce an abundance of weeds and weed seeds, a good source of food for rats. And it didn’t take long for the rats to discover an even bigger bounty in the Valley’s orchards and fields.

“Rodents are everywhere and they are opportunists,” said Rachel Long, a University of California, cooperative extension adviser. “They move in from their surrounding urban habitats to take advantage of any food source they can find. And once that food source disappears they search for food elsewhere.”

The traditionally used methods for rodent control involve the use of mechanical traps which fail to work on a mechanical error. Fumigation of pesticides is done to keep rodents away from the applications. Glue boards are used which are dangerous when children and pets are around.
