Are transgenic crop the future?

For thousands of year, cotton has been significant crop in India contributing to its rich history of textiles. Despite the agricultural legacy cotton farmer faced many challenges such as serious pest attack impacting crop yield. 90% of the cotton farmers experienced significant crop damage due to an insect called cotton bollworm. The cotton bollworm also called corn earworm or sorghum head worm is a serious pest to the cotton plant.

In 2002 Bt. cotton was introduced in India dramatically changing the future of cotton production in India. Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is a bacterium that occurs naturally in the soil and produces proteins that kill certain insects. Through biotechnology, scientists used these naturally occurring Bt proteins to develop insect-protected crops that help farmers protect against insect damage and destruction. When targeted insects eat the plant containing the protein, they ultimately die.

But in the recent years, there have been articles flooding of Transgenic Bt cotton plants that have a build up a resistance to the lethal protein and are being attacked by bollworms.

The potential of pests to develop resistance against the defense mechanisms of crops is well-known and is not unique to genetically engineered plants. Insects have developed resistance to a crop defense no matter how it was developed. The crop defense might be a chemical or biological agent, a gene already in the crop species and transferred to commercial plants by conventional plant breeding methods, or a gene introduced by recombinant DNA technology. Because more than 500 insects and mites already have acquired resistance to a number of insecticides, there is concern that similar resistance to Bt toxins could develop.

Several major pests, including the tobacco budworm, Colorado potato beetle, Indian meal moth and diamondback moth, have demonstrated the ability to adapt. It has been reported that the diamondback moth evolved high levels of resistance in the field as a result of repeated use of Bt. As Bt use increases on more acres, some scientists have predicted that insect resistance to Bt will be a major problem. Considerable controversy exists about how Bt should be managed to prolong its usefulness.

Bt resistance in pink bollworm is caused by changes to a gut protein called cadherin. In susceptible insects, cadherin binds to the Bt toxin, eventually leading to the death of the insect. When mutations in the gene encoding cadherin block this binding, the insect becomes resistant.

There were only two benefits of Bt cotton. One, it controls bollworm, due to which the yield is protected. Two, it reduces the use of insecticides meant for bollworm control but after bollworm developed resistance to the Bt. Cotton. The genetically modified method has to be given a second thought.

BT. COTTON FALLING TO PEST, MAHARASHTRA TENSED

MUMBAI: Genetically modified or Bt cotton is no longer resistant to pink bollworm a major pest in Maharashtra, prompting the state government to write to the Union government to seek its intervention.

A research report by Dr. K R Kranthi, former director of Central Institute of Cotton Research (CICR), shows that pink bollworm has developed resistance to Bollgard-II Bt cotton not only in Maharashtra but other cotton-growing states as well. Bollgard-II is the Bt hybrid variety that was introduced in 2010.

Bijay Kumar, principal secretary, agriculture department, said, “There are nearly 85 private Bt cotton seed-producing companies in the state and we have been getting several complaints of crop failure from farmers.”

The issue assumes significance given that Maharashtra is the largest cotton-growing state in the country. Nearly 40 lakh hectares or 35% of the cultivatable area is under cotton production. Nearly 96% cotton-growing farmers in the state use BG-II Bt cotton seeds for cultivation.

Last year, nearly 90% of cotton farms in Jalna were affected and farmers had approached the state government seeking compensation for the losses they had incurred. It could not do much, though. The state government has found itself in a tight spot and asked the Union government to denotify  Bt cotton seed varieties prone to pink bollworm. The government also wants the Centre to undertake an awareness campaign across the state on failed resistance of the Bt variety to pests so that farmers can make an informed choice. Pink bollworm is a small, thin, gray moth with fringed wings-the most damaging of all pests that attack cotton crop in the country. The female moth lays eggs on cotton balls and larvae emerge only to destroy entire fields by chewing through the cotton lint to feed on seeds.

COTTON CROP HIT BY SEVERE PEST ATTACK IN SOUTH PUNJAB

MULTAN: The Cotton crop has entered a critical stage in South Punjab as a number of sucking and chewing pests have attacked the crop.

In most of the fields, whitefly and pink bollworm have damaged the crops inflicting losses of millions of rupees. These pests should be controlled as early as possible so that cotton crop can be saved from a considerable loss in final yield.

This was said by Agricultural Information Assistant Director Naveed Asmat Kahloon in Multan on Monday. He was speaking to representatives of electronic and print media in his office.

He said that the teams of agriculture departments conducted pest scouting in the fields on daily basis. The hot spots of pests, especially whitefly, thrips and pink bollworm were being observed in the fields.

He added that symptom of pink bollworm attack was an appearance of rosette flowers. “The rosette flowers must be plucked and destroyed as early as possible,” he pointed out.

He pointed out that if farmers apply pesticides against pink bollworm before its attack, it would promote whitefly infestation and create resistance in other pests against the pesticides.

The official advised farmers to apply pesticides against pink bollworm after pest scouting by some experts. “In case it is found to have reached ETL then farmers should apply pesticides after consulting agriculture officials,” he said.

To counter the problem, the Punjab Agriculture Research Board and the Department of Entomology, University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF) inked an agreement for kicking off projects worth Rs75 million to manage the threat posed by whitefly and pink bollworm that inflict a loss of billions to the national economy.

The little critters: Midges

They are often mistaken as mosquitoes because of their similar size and body shape. They are tiny flying insects with a wingspan of 2-3 mm. They are also called as the blind mosquitoes.

Guess who are those?

Those are the midges!

These little critters are tiny flies, about the size of a pinhead.

Male midges tend to have feathery antennae, something not seen on mosquitoes. Also, they rest with their two front legs hovering above the surface.

Midges can be found on along the coast, shores, and beds of any body of water. They are also found around ponds or streams in late afternoon and evening in swarms that produce a humming sound. Midges may breed in water or manure or under tree bark. They lay their eggs in shallow waters and worm-like larvae are hatched.

Due to their poor flying ability, they are often at the mercy of wind currents and can be blown into backyards. For this reason, they may be considered a nuisance to homeowners. They may take shelters under soffits, eaves etc.

They easily get attracted to artificial lights at night and thus are attracted towards many homes. Spiders are their predators which get attracted to the places where midges are found.

Only the female midges bite. They need a protein-rich meal of fresh blood in order to mature their eggs. Both the males and the females rely on sugar meals for energy for flight but the females need more than this to ensure the next generation. Female midges feed on the blood of birds as well as mammals. Each species has its own preferred choice of host. Most of the animals they bite are cattle, sheep, and deer but they can also feast on human skin, leaving an irritating bite mark that can swell up.

Biting midges are most active under calm conditions. They tend to bite around dawn and dusk but may continue to bite through the night. On overcast days they are also known to bite throughout the day. In order to develop more eggs, they need more protein and hunt down blood in order to boost their supplies.

When they bite, midges firstly pierce the skin before pumping saliva into the wound to stop the blood from clotting. It’s the saliva that then often produces a reaction in humans, which can lead to itchy red spots that can last minutes or days. In some extreme cases, people can also develop fluid-filled blisters and be swelling as a response to their midge bite. Most individuals are unaware they are being bitten at the time.

Midges are often thought to be a problem unique to Scotland but that is untrue as they can be found in many Northern areas of England and Wales and, thanks, climate change, they seem to be spreading even further South and East each year. Areas such as the Highlands and Western Scotland suffer the worst when compared to the rest of the country.

An incredible 139 billion midges are in the Highlands and Islands – 44.8 million per person.

Now leading midge expert Dr. Alison Blackwell said one trap in Glencoe caught 1.3 million of the biting beasties last week – double the number in the same period last year when weekly catches were just 680,000.

Hogan pushes Kamenetz on money for midges

Hogan, speaking during a meeting of the Board of Public Works, said his administration offered last week to pay half the cost of spraying the gnat-like insects this year and next if the county matches that sum.

Bed Bugs – The Bloodsucking Parasites

Bed bugs are the nocturnal, reddish-brown insects. They are the pesky little pests of the size between 1 and 7 millimeters. These creatures have dorsoventrally flattened bodies that allows them to hide in areas such as floor cracks, carpets, beds and upholstered furniture.

Bed bugs feed on the blood of humans and other warm-blooded animals as their only source of nutrition. In order to mature into adults, they must feed once during each of their immature stages. Adult females also need blood in order to produce eggs.

Bed bugs inject an anticoagulant along with saliva when they pierce skin for the meal. The anticoagulants are responsible to generate a response in person’s body. The size of the bite depends upon the anticoagulants and the number of times a person is bitten.

Bed bug bite reactions don’t always appear immediately after you’re bitten and may take a few days to begin causing symptoms. However, not everyone reacts to bed bug bites in the same manner. Bite reactions are variable with the intensity increasing or decreasing depending upon the number of bites.

Bites are commonly found on the parts of the body that are more likely to be exposed to bed bugs during sleep – the hands, neck, face, shoulders, legs, and arms. Bed bug bites are often grouped together in a small area and at times may occur in a line or a zigzag pattern. Bites normally look like small, flat or raised areas that may become inflamed, itchy, red or blistered.

Scratching bed bug bites and failure to keep the bites clean and disinfected may lead to a secondary infection that can cause further swelling and bleeding. Children, the elderly, and individuals with weak immune systems, particularly those who are bedridden, may develop secondary infections that result from bed bug bites.

Jersey City woman found dead in home overrun with bedbugs

First-responders tried unsuccessfully to resuscitate a woman police were told was found unresponsive in her home on Sunday morning.

When medics arrived at the home they needed to call in a hazmat team to deal with a massive bug infestation problem. In addition to the woman, five other people, including the woman’s parents and her daughters, lived at the home at the time she was found. She was declared dead at the scene.

The home was infested with bedbugs, and the infestation was so bad that a hazmat station was set up on Griffith Street to disinfect anyone who had gone inside the building. The Fios story also reported that the health department was called in to check on the home’s safety and to take whatever action against the homeowners was necessary

Parliament is infested with bedbugs and there’s ‘urgent action’ to clear them out

Pest-busters are taking urgent action to wipe out a bedbug infestation in Parliament. The blood-sucking parasitic insects were discovered this week in the Palace of Westminster and 7 Millbank, both home to MPs’ offices.

It is the latest in a series of pest related problems to beset Parliament, which spent £103,157 combating mice, flies, months, pigeons and gulls in the last year alone. Staff and MPs have been told to consult the NHS if they think they’ve been bitten.

Monitoring is underway to check if the bugs – which are notoriously difficult to remove – have spread to other areas.

Woman claims arm infection, blood disease came from a bedbug bite

Johnson, 58, was bitten about a month ago and was hospitalized for several days, fighting the infection. Her left hand swelled to more than twice its normal size, and she complained of pain and tenderness in her arm.

Johnson recently returned to the hospital because of stiffness in her arm that alarmed her. She plans to see a blood doctor. She said she spends about $80 dollars a month on preventive measures to help keep the bedbugs at bay.

The rise of the bed bug as a nuisance pest in hotels

Bed bugs are haematophagous sucking insects, feeding exclusively on blood. Bed bugs are insects that resemble an apple seed in appearance, are about ¼ inch long, do not jump and have no wings. Prior to feeding, they are flat but after feeding on blood they become bloated and turn dark red. During the day, these small, reddish-brown bugs hide in cracks and crevices of mattresses and foundation/box springs or within 15 feet of a bed. Then, at night, they come out of their hiding spaces to feed, usually on humans but also on other warm-blooded animals. These insects prefer darkness and tend to hide near the bed. They travel up to 20 feet in search of a human host. Hungry bed bugs may also feed during the daytime, especially if this is when the occupant normally sleeps. They are not only found in beds but they can fit anywhere their bodies can be hidden as there are as thin as a sheet of paper. Hotels with high occupancy turnover are especially vulnerable to infestation. Bed bugs mostly bite on the upper body, neck, arm, and shoulders but may be found on legs or ankles, too.

They don’t transmit diseases, but they do bite and take blood. People can get secondary infections if they scratch their wounds. In some people, the itching is unbearable. However, a persistent belief about bed bugs is that they thrive only in dirty conditions. Bed bugs are not attracted to dirt and grime; they are attracted to warmth, blood and carbon dioxide. This means no hotel is truly exempt from a bed bug infestation or the resulting liability, no matter how high-end and reputable. Hotel guests around the country are reporting being bitten by bed bugs and are filing claims seeking compensation for insect bites and ruined hotel stays. Treating for an infestation can be time-consuming and costly. And, because the bed bugs lifecycle shows several stages of development.

Female lays about 2-3 eggs a day in the same places where the bugs hide. The eggs are yellowish white in color about 1 mm long. Some 300 eggs can be found in cracks and crevices of buildings and furnitures. The eggs usually hatch after 8-11 days.

The newly hatched bed bug is pale yellow in color and resemble as adult but is much smaller in size. There are 5 nymphal instars. This period commonly last for 5-8 weeks.

The adult bed bug can live 6-9 months without food. The bed bug can withstand a long period of starvation up to 500 days. Under laboratory conditions, the adult may live up to 4 years.

Take precautions for bed bug ‘hitchhikers

She said her office averages about one complaint a month, but not all of them are valid. Sometimes people are just not happy about their accommodations, she said.

She added that the complaints come from all over, and sometimes even a “5-star” hotel can have a bed bug problem.

Rappold explained that when she receives a complaint, she follows a procedure that includes visiting the facility where the complaint originated. If the report is substantiated, Rappold’s office requires professional pest control measures within two weeks and proof that such measures were conducted.

“The only way you can get rid of this problem is if you hire pest control. It’s really hard to do on your own,” Rappold explained. “They have to use a licensed pest control specialist.”

She said sometimes her office has to apply some pressure to correct a problem, but “we try to work with people and understand we live in a community where it’s hard to get services.”

As regional health program manager, Rappold handles complaints from all over the six counties of the San Luis Valley. She tracks trends in complaints and said they are seasonal, with this time of year and into the coming months being more active, especially as more tourists are visiting the area. Rappold said her office does not have regulatory authority over apartments but can require treatment actions at motels and hotels.

Everyone is at risk for getting bed bugs. Their presence is not determined by the cleanliness of an area, Rappold shared. They are experts at hiding and go just about anywhere. They can go for long periods of time without feeding, which allows them to attach to items such as luggage and clothes, and travel home with guests.

Bonaventure Hotel Sued Over Bed Bugs

A Delta Airlines attendant has filed a lawsuit against the famed Westin Bonaventure Hotel, saying that she’d suffered bed bug bites during a stay there. According to the complaint, Chery checked into her room at the Bonaventure on November 5, 2014. She’d slept for about an hour when she began to feel “severe itching and burning all over her body, including on the right side of her face, her arms, her left index finger and down the side of her right thigh,” per the suit.

She was bitten about six to seven times, and that she could see blood stains on her bed. The suit mentions that she’d taken photos of the bugs.

A manager and hotel security came to confirm the presence of bed bugs and was given another room to stay in, according to the complaint. She dumped all her belongings, including her Delta uniform, immediately after the alleged incident, and that she’d suffered months of insomnia and anxiety because of it.

On the bedbug registry a site for guests to self-report bed bugs, the Bonaventure had 23 reports posted between 2010 and 2015.

Another bedbug lawsuit was filed at Los Angeles Superior Court in August; a family from the Bay Area claimed that they were bitten by bed bugs at the Grand Californian Hotel at Disneyland. Unfortunately, bed bugs aren’t exactly uncommon in the L.A. area. Earlier this year, pest control service Terminix released a ranking of the most bed bug-infested cities, and L.A. landed in the fourth spot, right after Cleveland, Ohio.

Agricultural sector plays a strategic role in the process of economic development of a country. It has already made a significant contribution to the economic prosperity of advanced countries and its role in the economic development of less developed countries is of vital importance.

The crop-eating allium leaf miner is from Europe. Experts say the bug, which thrives on vegetables like onions, garlic, and leeks, was first found in the U.S. two years ago in Pennsylvania. Since then, it’s infested the Northeast destroying crops. It’s also made its way to the Hudson Valley.

“First I’ve seen it in my fields ever was a few weeks ago. I thought it was a mini-termite,” says fourth generation black dirt onion farmer Chris Pavelski, of Pine Island.

Ethan Grundbert, of the Cornell Cooperative Extension, says if the population continues to build like it has in Pennsylvania, it could be a serious issue Hudson Valley farmers are faced with the next few years.

News 12 has learned that the bugs die off in the summer months but reappear in the fall.

Currently, pesticides are still being tested.

This comes after a Palm City boy suffered brain damage after termite fumigation at his Palm City Home. “We are aware of the tragic and heartbreaking incident involving Peyton, and the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is investigating Sunland Pest Control in collaboration with the EPA and the Department of Health,” the department said in a statement late Friday afternoon.

Peyton McCaughey turned 10 Thursday at Miami Children’s Hospital, barely able to turn his head, unable to stand up or talk. His family said the boy has suffered brain damage after termite fumigation on their house.

Insects are found in each and every corner of the world. They are the most common animals on the earth and are also familiar to everyone. 1.5 million Of insect species are being named. SNEAKY PRAIRIE DOGS

You might notice burrows in your gardens and you’ll keep wondering who made those!

The invaders in your gardens are these sneaky creatures called as prairie dogs.

They peep through these burrows, exactly like the one in the picture alongside, thus invade your territory!
Prairie dogs are herbivorous burrowing rodents. The five species commonly found are black-tailed, white-tailed, Gunnison’s, Utah, and Mexican prairie dogs. They are a type of ground squirrel.

On average, these stout-bodied rodents will grow to be between 30 and 40 cm. The body of the prairie dog is covered with brownish-grey fur. They have very small, round ears and a short tail.

Prairie dogs are highly social creatures and they live in large colonies or “towns”. They live in closely-knit family groups called “coteries.” Coteries usually contain an adult male, one or more adult females and their young offspring. These coteries are grouped together into wards (or neighborhoods) and several wards make up a colony or town. The collections of prairie dog families can span hundreds of acres.

Prairie dogs live in complex networks of tunnels with multiple openings. Colonies are easily identified by the raised-burrow entrances that give the diminutive prairie dogs some extra height when acting as sentries and watching for signs of danger. The tunnels contain separate “rooms” for sleeping, rearing young, storing food and eliminating waste. Members of the same group will show their affection by kissing and grooming other members of the group. But if you are from other family or colony, you got to face their aggression will show aggression. They in a group will chase the unwanted member from the other colonies. Aren’t they protective!

Prairie dogs have a complex system of communication that includes a variety of pitched warning barks that signal different types of predators. They have earned their name from settlers traveling across the plains who thought that these warning calls sounded like dogs barking.

Prairie dogs are chiefly herbivorous, though they eat some insects. They feed primarily on grasses and small seeds. In the fall, they eat broadleaf forbs. Prairie dogs hibernate during the winter. They will survive by using the energy from fat tissue that was collected during the year. Some species of prairie dogs can wake up to eat during hot winter days.

These rodents are known to be nuisance cause when they invade the gardens and parks. They easily make holes in the backyards and can roam around your home. Also, they chew shrubs and bushes from the gardens causing destruction.

CLOVIS, N.M. (KRQE) – O.G. Potter Memorial Park in Clovis looks normal from afar, but with a closer look, you’ll see prairie dogs peeking their heads out of the ground. Residents say they’re invading and causing concern.

“See we play kick ball. They kick the ball and we run and we don’t want them to fall in the hole and break their ankle or twist their ankle or something,” said Clovis resident Shakila Mcclendon.

Holes are appearing around the park and becoming a problem for not only park-goers, but residents who live nearby.

Neighbors in Clovis are concerned about the growing population of prairie dogs eating crops, taking over the city pool, and possibly carrying diseases.

As the prairie dog population in La Plata County rises and wreaks havoc on landowners, the presence of the often-reviled rodent has some hoping for an unconventional solution: the plague.

“They are a big problem, and it’s a constant battle,” said Dave James, who has ranched in the Animas Valley north of Durango for more than 50 years. “The plague would help.”

Over the past 10 years or so, farmers, ranchers and land managers in Southwest Colorado have noted the uptick in prairie dog colonies and the growing frustrations with them.

“It’s gradually gotten worse and worse,” said Ben Bain, weed control coordinator for La Plata County.

Prairie dogs are often killed by farmers and landowners because of their destructive landscaping and the fact that they eat the grasses meant for their livestock.

Fishy Silverfish

You might have noticed some shiny creatures moving around your place, specifically during the night.

If yes, then your house is invaded by the annoying silverfish!

This insect gets its name from its silvery, metallic appearance and fish-like shape and movements. Silverfish have no wings or fins but are able to run very fast. The adult silverfish is brown-gray or silvery and grayish blue in color while the newly hatched eggs are whiter in hue. This said appearance will change into grayish and metallic blue as the silverfish gets older. They tend to hide their presence from humans which means any damage they have caused could go unnoticed as well.

They are nocturnal creatures that normally roam homes late at night, in search of food and water. Their flat bodies make them ideal hiders capable of squeezing into even the smallest cracks and crevices during daylight hours. They are often associated with basements, closets, bookcases, and storage areas. These insects cannot climb on smooth vertical surfaces and may be found trapped in sinks, bathtubs, and similar places. Despite the circumstantial evidence, they do not come up out of drains.

Silverfish consume matter that contains polysaccharides, such as starches and dextrin in adhesives.
These include book bindings, carpet, clothing, coffee, dandruff, glue, hair, some paints, paper, photos, plaster, sugar, flour and rolled oats. They will damage wallpaper in order to consume the paste. Other substances they may eat include cotton, dead insects, linen, silk, or even their own exuvia. During the famine, a silverfish may even attack leather ware and synthetic fabrics.

A housing association tenant is locked in a row with his landlord after insects invaded his home.

Peter Harrison, who lives in flats on Waterloo Street in Newcastle, claims his home has been taken over by silverfish which he believes live in the block’s ventilation system.

The 48-year-old has said he has even spotted the tiny creatures in his bed but that landlord, Places for People, is refusing to take responsibility.

Mr. Harrison claims he paid £62 for the infestation to be dealt with after Places for People told him to deal with the issue himself.

But now that the bugs have returned, he says he doesn’t want to be constantly forking out cash for a problem he believes is down to the building.

Invasive mealybugs

You must have seen something on plants that you first thought was a tiny piece of cotton, but then you realized was a living thing. Those tiny white bugs you noticed while watering your plants might be a mealybug infestation. These tiny pests are typically white in color, which comes from a wax produced by special glands on the top and sides of their bodies. Mealybugs are so small that they can come in undetected from a variety of sources: potting soil, other plants, fresh produce from the grocery store or farmers market.

Mealybugs are related to aphids, which are also covered with waxy secretions, so these two insects are often confused.

Indonesia’s annual cassava production is 24 million tonnes, grown in 1.1 million hectares of cassava plantations across the archipelago.

Mumbai loses 238 rain trees to mealy bugs

Mumbai has lost 238 rain trees to a pest attack in the last couple of months, stated a report compiled by the garden department of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

As per the report, a pest called Mealybug infested more than 50 per cent of those trees which have died. It revealed that 500 rain trees across the city were infested by the pest, but after taking a host of measures, the civic body was able to save 262 of them.

“Initially, we thought that it was a temporary attack, which will be washed out in heavy rains, but the Mealybug population continued to increase rapidly, attacking more and more trees,” said a garden department official.

WKBN-TV reports Youngstown police have received more than a dozen calls in the past three weeks about raccoons acting strangely in the daytime.

Photographer Robert Coggeshall says he was playing with his dogs outside his home last week when one such raccoon approached them. Coggeshall says the animal would stand on its hind legs, show its teeth and fall over backward.

DENVER — A dog owner wants to warn others after his 12-pound Daschund was attacked by a raccoon in his own backyard.

Zachary Rosanski let his dog out after he got off work and heard a horrible noise. When he opened up the door, his dog ran back inside and that’s when he spotted a large raccoon in a tree.

His dog, Bastian, was bleeding from his throat area and on his face. They immediately rushed him to the veterinarian.

“He ended up having a puncture wound on top of his nose, two puncture wounds on the bottom of his nose and about an inch gash underneath his chin that was split wide open,” said Rosanski.

The vet told Rosanski his case wasn’t isolated. Denver7 talked with the veterinarian and she said they saw three raccoon attacks in just one week.

Ladybugs: Nuisance to homeowners

Ladybugs seem to be the latest topic of conversation; a conversation which tends to include many expletives. In the summer that sweet little red bug with the black spots has a tendency to make us smile when we see it flying around.

The Ladybug is bright red with a few black spots. Their heads are small and they don’t have that larger middle section that Lady Beetles do. They typically do not swarm into homes as you usually only see one true ladybug at a time. Asian Lady Beetles, however, are light to dark orange and have as many as 22 spots.

It is not uncommon to see adult ladybugs grouped together on the sides of houses and other buildings in the early fall as they prepare for the winter months. Soffit and gable vents in home attics are common entry points for the beetles, but they will come in any way they can. Any crack in windows, walls or the sides of doors is a welcome mat. If you see a few, you can guarantee that more will join them as they give off a scent meant to attract others and let them know that they have found a spot. Then they will work their way around the doors and windows looking for the tiniest of entry. Once they find it, they will likely move into a crawl space or attic and spend the winter in comfort.

Occasionally, you might see them make their way out of hiding on a warm day and perch in the sun on a window. They can get a little confused and instead of finding their way outside, they wander into the main part of the house. They release a foul odor that is a deterrent to other animals who might want to eat them, they have also been known to leave behind stains on curtains and windows of feces and a yellowish secretion when disturbed.

SWARMS OF BITING LADYBUGS INVADE MONTREAL-AREA HOMES

The unseasonably warm weather in Montreal this week has brought with it blue skies — as well as swarms of biting, invasive ladybugs.

“One weekend in the fall, the air is thick with ladybugs.

She said she’s encountered them each fall in the three years she’s lived in the area.

At this time of year, Miller said, she gets pelted by ladybugs when she steps out of the house.

And it’s not just an autumn nuisance, she said. They’ve been burrowing into the nooks and crannies of her home for the winter, coming out when her family lights a fire and warms up the house.

She said she’s been bitten a number of times, and while it doesn’t hurt quite as much as a bee sting, it still hurts.

“Over the course of the day and well into the night, I was catching them in my bedroom and disposing of them down the toilet. I thought they were gone, but I’ve caught three of them so far this morning and can hear more bouncing around somewhere in the room.”

Mall of America (MOA) Senior Manager of Environmental Services Bucky Wimby told WWN that the bugs were supposed to be used as pesticides to control pests, but “they became belligerent and attacked humans.  It scared the hell out of us.”

Three hundred people were taken to the hospital with serious wounds – including serious flesh wounds, broken bones and lung and respiratory disease.  Five people have died.

“We are stunned.  Ladybugs are docile creatures” said Wimby, who added that ladybugs have always been friendly to humans.

These large rodents are often a nuisance to gardeners, farmers and homeowners due to their appetites and burrowing habits. The yellow-bellied marmot is the most common species in the United States and a close relative of the woodchuck. Also known as rockchucks or whistle pigs, yellow-bellied marmots are social creatures that live in communities of 10 to 20 individuals. During the spring and summer, the animals undergo a period of hyperphagia, a feeding frenzy designed to fatten the marmots so they can survive the coming winter. By huddling together in underground burrows lined with hay or grass, marmots hibernate for up to 200 days at a time, easily spending half of their 13 to 15 years of life asleep.

Yellow-bellied marmots grow about 2 feet long and weigh up to 12 pounds. They have coarse brown or tan fur with light yellow coloring on their bellies and large claws on their front feet used for digging extensive burrows underground. Their stout bodies are designed to hold thick layers of fat and their prominent front teeth allow them to chew the stalks, leaves, blossoms, and fruits of their favorite plants.

High elevations and rocky outcroppings used as lookout posts are favored habitats for marmots. They can also be found among pastures, meadows, and rocky steppes. The animals have been known to live in the foothills of mountainous regions, burrowing beneath slopes of tumbled-down rocks and boulders, as well. In urban areas, marmots can be seen sunning themselves or gnawing on the grass at the side of the road.

Farmers encounter problems when marmots enter fields where cereal grains, root vegetables, or herbs grow. Marmots can cause major damage to gardens and crops. When feeding, marmots tend to chew the entire plant down to the ground, leaving nothing. Ripe vegetables, herbs, and cereal grains are the most enticing temptations to hungry marmots, who will dig beneath most fences to get at desired plants.

Marmots may bite you if you try to feed them or you accidentally disturb them.

The large rodents have become pests in the Eastern Washington town of Prosser. Diners at a restaurant in Prosser were startled Monday when a furry marmot wandered through the front door and settled into a corner.

That was no surprise to city Administrator Charlie Bush, who says the big rodents have long been a problem in the central Washington wine town.

In 2006 and 2007, the city paid $5,700 over two years to hire trappers to thin the population. But last year, the City Council ran short of money and decided to get out of the marmot-control business.

Three years ago, residents complained that the rodents were swarming a 75-unit development of manufactured homes near the Prosser airport, burrowing under homes and fouling front porches with their droppings. There were even unconfirmed accounts of marmots attacking people.

Fruit fly Menace

If you have been seeing small flies or gnats in your kitchen, they’re probably fruit flies. These pesky pests can be found throughout the world, in homes, gardens, warehouse, grocery stores, wineries, restaurants etc. They are readily attached to any number of materials, especially that of moisture. Fruit flies can be a problem year-round but are especially common during late summer/fall because they are attracted to ripened or fermenting fruits and vegetables.

But they also will breed in drains, garbage disposals, empty bottles and cans, trash containers, mops and cleaning rags. Hence, they also cause various bacterial diseases.

When the larvae hatch, they feed on the moist surface too. The entire life cycle from egg to adult takes only about eight to ten days so they proliferate with great rapidity.

The Border region has been hit by its worse fruit fly outbreak in five years believed to be the result of unseasonal summer weather.

In the past few weeks, humidity has caused a proliferation of the fruit fly menace in Albury and Wodonga.

The increased number of Queensland fruit fly are also causing major problems for fruit growers at Cobram and Shepparton.

The fruit fly scourge is only a recent phenomenon in the Goulburn Valley.

Victorian Fruit Growers Association president Gary Godwil said it was a big issue last year, but it was worse this year.

Mr Godwil said there was a significant expense involved in controlling the fly with the considerable time needed to apply control methods such as baiting.

“It is a big cost to the whole industry, a massive cost. I am baiting every 10 days,” he said.

Spoiled fruit is worth a lot of money and Mr Godwil said it could not even be used for juice.

Prickly Porcupines: Huge threat to plants, agriculture and humans as well!

With bizarre humanoid ears, dangerous spikes, a rattle like a rattlesnake and enormous teeth with roots that extended back into its skull porcupines are some of the prickliest creatures around!

But there’s a lot more to know about these pokey mammals. Porcupines are one of the longest-living rodents. Porcupines are medium-sized rodents related to beavers, and they are the third-largest rodents on earth. These animals like to hang out in trees as they eat. There are more than two dozen porcupine species and all boast a coat of needle-like quills to give predator a sharp reminder that this animal is no easy meal.

Porcupines are nocturnal. They hide during the daylight but come out at night to feast on a vegetarian diet of berries, stems, grass, and tree-bark. It is tolerant of several different habitats: mountains, tropical and subtropical grasslands, scrublands, and forests. This is a large rodent, growing more than three feet long and weighs 32 pounds. It is covered in multiple layers of quills. The longest quills grow from its shoulders to about a third of the animal’s length.

When irritated or alarmed, the porcupine raises its quills and rattles the hollow spines on its tail. If the disturbance continues, the species launches a backward attack and clashes its rear against the offending animal. This action drives the spines deep into the enemy, often leading to severe injury or death. The majority of the damage is done by the short quills that are hidden beneath the longer, thinner spines on the tail and back. Quite often, these quills become dislodged and remain in the victim. Porcupines are nocturnal, with the species seeking shelter in caves, between rocks, or in its burrow during the day. The burrow is usually self-constructed, with a long entrance tunnel, multiple exits, and a large inner chamber. Gnawed bones and most of the excavated dirt is usually left at the entrance.

The main food source for the porcupine is vegetable material of all kinds, including fruits, grains, and roots. They have also been known to chew on bones, in search of minerals (such as calcium) that help their spines grow. The species utilizes both natural plants and agricultural crops as food sources. The porcupine uses crop plants extensively as a food resource, thus leading to a significant loss of agriculture. In addition, the species can be extremely destructive to gardens and landscaping, as they burrow through or consume the resources in these areas.

Due to a diet low in sodium, porcupines may try to satisfy their dietary need for salt by chewing on wooden structures, tools, and other materials used in outdoor work or recreation. They are attracted to almost any object that has been handled by humans because of the salt found in human sweat.  Porcupines are also attracted to the glue used to bond plywood on wooden structures.  Car tires and hoses may also be chewed on for their mineral content or road salt coating.

The primary conflict with porcupines occurs when a person or pet ignores the warning signals and ends up with quills lodged in their skin. Each porcupine quill has a greasy coating and at the tip is a small, backward projecting barb that serves to work the quills ever deeper into the flesh. Once embedded, quills cannot easily be pulled out.

Serious injuries can result when humans or animals come in contact with a porcupine if the eyes, mouth or throat are afflicted.

Villagers who live in foothills are more likely to suffer the vagaries of these animals,” Manzar told IANS. Discovering “insects” in your breakfast cereal may be disgusting, but it isn’t unusual because many insects like to eat what we eat. Stored foods commonly infested include flour, cereals, cracked grains, baking mixes and processed foods, crackers, macaroni, cured meats, powdered milk, dried fruits, nuts, popcorn, and spices. Insects that feed on these products may also infest other grain-based items such as pet foods, birdseed, and ornamental corn.

Several stages (egg, larva, pupa, and adult) of these insects may be present at the same time in infested products. Because we keep our houses warm, these insects may continually reproduce and many stored product infestations can be found nearly any time of the year.

The first indication of an infestation is often the presence of small brown beetles, moths or worms in cupboards or on counters. Upon closer inspection, insects may also be found in opened packages or containers of food and in the cracks and crevices of cupboards. Unopened packages may also become infested because some of these insects can readily chew into cardboard and foil packaging. Insects can be brought into the home along with infested food products. They can multiply and spread to other stored foods.

The Indian meal moth is the most common food-infesting moth found in homes, grocery stores and any place where dried pet foods are produced or stored. Food infested with these insects will have silk webbing present, especially near the food surface.

These common insects scavenge and feed on an animal matter like dried meats, dead insects, hides, and woolens. The species that feed on wool and other natural fibers or blends are sometimes called carpet beetles. Closely related species, such as the warehouse beetle, varied carpet beetle, and larder beetle, have expanded their diet and also feed on grain and grain-based products. They are especially common in flour and cereals but also are found in candy, cocoa, cookies, cornmeal, nuts, pasta, dried spices and many other dry foods.

The Sawtoothed grain beetle is another very common pantry pest. It does not feed on intact whole grains but feeds on many processed food products such as breakfast food, bran, dried fruits, nuts, sugar, chocolate, and macaroni. It is especially fond of oatmeal and birdseed. These flat beetles can even get into sealed boxes and packages of food.

Stout beetles are common in homes where they attack pet food, cereals, spices, drugs, tobacco and other packaged foods. Because they closely resemble each other, they are often confused. The heads of both beetles are tucked under the prothorax and are not visible from above. Both are brown and about the same size.

The two beetles can be distinguished by their wing covers. The wing covers of the drugstore beetle have rows of longitudinal grooves, while those of the cigarette beetle are smooth.

Drugstore beetles: The drugstore beetle will feed on bread, but it will also feed on any dried, food-based material. It will damage book bindings. It has been found to perforate tinfoil and sheet lead and easily chews through the most food packaging material.

Cigarette beetles: The cigarette beetle derives its name from its serious infestations of stored tobacco. Adult beetles are about 1/8-inch long, light brown and oval. The most common food materials include pet food, cereal, peppers, spices, raisins, and seeds.

Flour Beetles

There are a number of species of tiny beetles that infest flour, but the two most common flour beetles are the confused and red flour beetles. These beetles are scavengers in that they cannot attack whole grains but rely on other insects to damage the kernels first. In homes, they can be found feeding on flour, cracked grains, cake mixes, beans, peas, dried fruits, nuts, chocolate, spices, and tobacco.

Granary and Rice Weevils

These insects damage whole grains or seeds. They generally do not feed on flour or cereals unless it has become caked.

Adult weevils are very similar. Both are dark reddish-brown and range in size from 1/8 to 3/16-inch long. They have a long snout projecting from the head and wing covers with distinct ridges.

They feed on whole grains, these insects are more likely to be a problem in grain bins and warehouses, but it is possible to have infestations in homes. Most common sources are popcorn, birdseed, decorative Indian corn, and nuts.

Mohammad Azad Ali, who was travelling in Sampark Kranti Express in Coach S-9 was shocked when he found a bug in the pakoda which was served to him by the train’s pantry service. The incident took place on August 2.

Incidents of dead insects, vermin being found in food served by Indian Railways are happening on the daily basis.

The quality just doesn’t seem to improve and such cases continue to happen even after the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) after their survey of food being served by Indian Railways mentioned that it was unfit for consumption.

But amidst all this when the passengers are creating hue and cry, it’s hard to say whether the concerned authorities are taking any action to curb all this.

Gopher menace in gardens!

Gophers are funny-looking little rodents that live in burrows. The gophers are burrowing rodents. Gophers are endemic to North and Central America. Gophers are especially frustrating because they live underground and it is impossible to follow them to their den. They are masters at tunneling and if even a couple of them move into the yard they quickly can undermine your gardening efforts quite literally. They are similar to rats in their coloring, but you can tell the gopher apart from the rat by its short tail.

Gophers are fairly small, around half a pound and 6-8 inches long. They like loose, moist soil, like the soil you carefully primed for your lawn and garden. Powerfully built in the forequarters, their front feet have long, sharp claws. Gophers have brownish soft fur, large cheek pouches and flattened heads with small ears and eyes. Their hairy tails are about four inches long and are used to navigate through tunnels when moving backward.

Gophers mean no harm to human beings, they can certainly leave you frustrated, especially if you’re a gardener who takes pride in their work. They can pull all of your beautiful plants and flowers underground with them within seconds considering that they eat all types of plants. Not only can they ruin all of your hard work, but they can often damage underground electrical lines and pipes with their out of control digging.

Once they get started, they create an elaborate network of tunnels, where they store the food they hoard. They carry food to their hoards by stuffing it in their cheek pouches. Unlike ground squirrels, gophers do not live in large communities and seldom find themselves above ground. It is not uncommon for gopher tunnels to interfere with irrigation systems, dams, fields and, of course, homeowners’ lawns and gardens.

On July 6, nearly a dozen dirt mounds began forming in the backyard of Fred Dykes’ home on Wayne Avenue, near Alameda Road in Pocatello.

The mounds are about a foot in diameter and six inches tall.

“The piles of dirt conceal little tunnel entrances that run through my yard now,” Dykes said.

Tunnels concealed by mounds, Dykes concluded, can only mean one thing — gophers.

“I have lived at 946 Wayne for 48 years now,” he said, “and for the first time, gophers have invaded my yard.”

Wayne used a small garden shovel on Friday to remove one of the dirt mounds contributing to the mini earthen obstacle course now visible from his kitchen window.

But the tunnels and mounds in Dykes’ yard serve as a minor example of the havoc gophers can wreak on various forms of terrain.

Authorities in Melba, Idaho, said Thursday that a woman died after her car fell into a sinkhole created by irrigation water running through gopher tunnels beneath the road.

The Associated Press reported yesterday that a “section of roadway 15 feet wide and 40 feet long collapsed on Saturday, killing 32-year-old Sonia Lopez of Melba.”

Scale Insects:A huge threat to trees and shrubs

During summer months there are many things in our yard that demand our attention. But while we are keeping everything looking nice there may be a problem that is forming on your trees and shrubs without you even noticing. Scale insects are so small that you may not notice their presence on a tree until they begin doing some real damage.

Scale insects are a class of insects named for the protective scales that cover their bodies. They are typically very small (up to 1/8 of an inch) and without any legs, they move quite slowly if at all. Scale insects usually survive by finding a good spot along the veins of a leaf and sucking the sap from the leaf. As long as the leaf continues to provide an adequate supply of sap, they will happily set up camp and stay.

While this sounds like a nice arrangement for the scale insect, it doesn’t really work out so well for the tree or shrub. A healthy tree produces a lot of sap and one scale insect probably wouldn’t do much damage. However, like many pests, these insects reproduce rapidly and each new generation will find a comfy spot, usually on the same tree, and start sucking away. The euonymus variety of scale insects can produce up to 3 generations each year! A constant drain of sap will eventually take its toll on the tree or shrub.

The insect, Phragmites scale, is attacking Roseau cane, a plant that grows profusely along the coast. It is considered vital to the fragile marsh’s longevity because the plant’s root system binds the delicate soil. Large stands of the cane have been decimated by the pest, starting in the Mississippi River delta in Plaquemines Parish, and it has been found in other areas.

“This is the next new threat to Louisiana’s coast,” said Randy Myers, assistant secretary of the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. “This is a significant problem.”

It’s unknown how the scale insect arrived in Louisiana, Diaz said. It has been intercepted in previous years at ports in Hawaii and California.

The scale could be spread by birds, floating pieces of Roseau cane or boats, he said.

Christine Wen began fielding calls earlier this month from Fontana and Williams Bay residents puzzled by the sticky sap covering not only plants but cars and patios.

The culprits, said Wen, a horticulture educator at the University of Wisconsin-Extension Walworth County office in Elkhorn, is an explosion of scale insects on many different species of mature trees in the area.

There are several different types of scale, but the insects all feed by sucking large amounts of sap from trees, Wen said.

The insects are more of a nuisance to people. Wen said when scale feed on the sap of leaves and twigs, they secrete a sticky liquid called honeydew. The liquid, which is often mistaken for sap, coats tree leaves and branches, and drips down to whatever is beneath. The honeydew is also a source of food for sooty mold fungus, which results in a black crust over surfaces.
