Cotton rats threat to our crops

In particular mouse and rat genes are now being cloned at an ever increasing rate providing a genetic framework for animal models of many human diseases. The cotton rat is technically known as Sigmodonhispidis.

Although it is a rodent, S. hispidis is neither a rat nor a mouse; its closest relatives are lemmings, voles, and muskrats. The cotton rat is the most common rodent in the southeastern United States. 

Notably, the cotton rat in the wild is now recognized as a primary host of hantavirus in the southeastern United States.

Cotton rats prefer dense cover such as grassy fields, overgrown roadsides, or fencerow vegetation adjacent to cultivated fields. They also occupy meadows, marshy areas, cactus patches, and weedy ditch banks. Under the protective cover, the cotton rat will have well-defined runways radiating in all directions from the nest site.

They are active year round and do not hibernate although heavy rains and extreme cold weather will decrease its activities. Hispid cotton rats run and swim. Cotton rats are normally herbivores, eating the roots, stems, leaves, and seeds of a wide variety of plants. They also feed on sugarcane, fruits, berries, and nuts. Cotton rats will cut tall plants off at the base and continue to cut them into shorter sections. They also eat insects, the eggs and young of ground-nesting birds and the carcasses of dead animals. They are called cotton rats because they build their nests out of cotton, and can damage cotton crops.

Cotton rats are basically nocturnal but will venture out in the daytime and are active year-round. They may damage a variety of crops, including grains, grasses, vegetables, peanuts, fruit crops, sweet potatoes, and sugar beets. Cotton rats are especially troublesome in sugarcane and melons. Since these animals will eat quail eggs, a high cotton rat population may have a detrimental impact on quail nesting success. Cotton rats also compete with quail for the same foods.

Hispid cotton rats are known to carry numerous diseases such as, hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, rat bite fever, salmonellosis and tularemia, which can be transmitted to humans, pets and livestock.  

Cyclical Population Explosion of Cotton Rats Causes Concern

CANYON  The Texas Panhandle and South Plains needed a pied piper this summer to deal with a population explosion of cotton rats.

Alarm was raised this year when the normally range-habitat rat started showing up in towns, getting the attention of homeowners, said Ken Cearley, Extension wildlife specialist in Canyon.

A pumpkin producer in Yoakum County reported up to 60 percent of his pumpkins were damaged by the rats gnawing on them. One homeowner reported trapping 10 in her home.

There was an article in “The Mammals of Texas – Online Edition.” where a incidence took place in Texas again where millions of cotton rodents caused serious losses to farm crops, particularly peas, peanuts, watermelons and cauliflower.

“This thing exploded rather quickly and we didn’t know how broad and wide it would be,” Gilliland said. “It has been a fire drill for us.

Roaches – the most prevalent pests!!!

Yes the roaches irrelevant of which of the species they may belong to, they are undeniably among the most prevalent pests in most places of residence.

Tim Bissonnette says cockroaches have been infesting his 8 Talwood Drive for years, but the problem has gotten worse in recent weeks.

“We can’t have our cupboard doors closed, we can’t turn off our kitchen lights, we can’t turn off our bathroom lights because that’s when the cockroaches will come out.

“We give care packages to every new tenant that comes into the building of Diatomaceus earth because they are not told about this problem,” said Bissonnette.

If the cockroach has an egg sack, Bissonnete says it could produce another 30 cockroaches if not treated properly. Bissonnette says he finds them in the bathroom, kitchen, the elevator and just about everywhere.

2nd eatery shut in week by inspectors over pests

Bob Evans in southwest Fort Wayne closed Thursday after health inspectors found dozens of cockroaches in the restaurant, including among food being prepared on the kitchen line, according to the inspection report.

It’s the second restaurant on the city’s southwest side to close this week because of roaches.

The Fort Wayne-Allen County Department of Health received a complaint Wednesday directing inspectors to check under the cooking area of the Village of Coventry restaurant.

“Cockroaches – treating it themselves,” the complaint said. “Don’t want public to know but they can’t get rid of them.”

The restaurant declined to comment when reached by phone Thursday afternoon.

Along with a can of roach spray on the ice machine, inspectors found “harborage conditions” and cockroaches running across the kitchen floor; among clean plates; and among food being prepared, the report states.

Traps contained more than 40 live cockroaches, inspectors reported, noting dead cockroaches were also in the restaurant.

Students say rental apartment full of cockroaches

The first time Winnet Runhare and her roommates visited their new Waterloo apartment, they saw a cockroach.

They assumed it was an aberration, and didn’t think much of it. “Two weeks in, we started seeing a lot more,” Runhare says.

Car damage? Blame the rodents!

Woodchucks occasionally eat garden or field crops and can cause considerable damage in a very short period. But have you seen woodchucks damaging vehicles??

Woodchucks Destroyed Paul Ryan’s Chevy Suburban

While its common for rodents like mice, rats, and squirrels to chew on engine wiring, it’s less common to hear about woodchucks chowing down on this vehicular “delicacy.” Earlier this month, however, House Speaker Paul Ryan had a personal encounter with some destructive groundhogs.

During a speech to The Economic Club of Washington D.C., he expressed sadness over his Chevy Suburban’s demise. “My car was eaten by animals. It’s just dead.”

Ryan went on to articulate the woodchuck ordeal. He had parked his Suburban at his mother’s house in Wisconsin for the winter. when the engine wasn’t working, he towed it to the dealer. A closer investigation revealed chewed wiring as the cause of the vehicle’s death. Apparently a whole clan of woodchucks had been living in the Suburban’s underbody, to keep warm during the chilly season.

After the new owner picked up the car, it caught fire while he was driving to the Department of Motor Vehicles to get it registered.

The driver pulled into the Steamboat Today parking lot, and the woodchuck was seen fleeing the scene.

MANSFIELD – You can’t just chuck out a woodchuck.

That’s what Carolyn Cyrus learned after a groundhog decided to burrow into the engine compartment of her 2015 Honda CR-V on Tuesday evening.

She got into her car about 7 p.m. Tuesday to go to Drug Mart, and was backing up when she noticed she had no power steering.

She went back inside to get her husband, Roy, who came outside and confirmed the lack of power steering.

Her husband lifted the hood and found the culprit hiding in the engine: a huge groundhog.

“After prodding and poking that thing, he still wouldn’t come out,” Carolyn Cyrus said.

So they put a bowl of dog food outside the car, hoping to lure it out.

Wednesday morning, the dog food and groundhog were gone, Cyrus said.

That was the good news. The bad news?

Her car needs to be repaired. She found three pieces of chewed wire on the ground, and she doesn’t know how much it’s going to cost. Bark beetle infestation in your woods and forests!

Aerial survey of forested land in North America show large paths of dead trees. The trees are supposed to be green. But the invasion of bark beetle has led to the death of trees in large numbers.

A tiny beetle has left the forestland dangerously vulnerable to death.

There are more than 600 species of bark beetles throughout the U.S. And since the bark beetle outbreak began back in 1996, these beetles have affected more than 41.7 million acres of land in the U.S. That’s about the size of the entire state of Florida! Since there are so many different types of bark beetles, it seems there’s a bark beetle out there for nearly every tree type.

Bark beetles survive in trees that are stressed, diseased, or injured; either by human activity or during storms or wildfires. They primarily attack cedar, fir, pine and spruce trees. 

Pine bark beetles create tunnels under the bark, and the shape and location of these tunnels can help you identify the species causing the infestation (see inset). These tunnels are on both the inside of the bark and the outside of the sapwood. The presence of these tunnels is a sure sign of infestation.

A Columbia University study calls the bark beetle “one of the world’s most aggressive tree-killing insects,” while the U.S. Department of Agriculture asks, “How can something so small kill something so big?”

Since 2010, an estimated 129 million trees have died just in California’s national forests because of the drought or bark beetles. That means 30 trees have been dying, on average, every minute!

Bark beetle outbreaks expanding in Colorado

Bark beetle outbreaks have continued to expand in parts of Colorado, based on a 2018 aerial forest health survey conducted by the Colorado State Forest Service and U.S. Forest Service, Rocky Mountain Region. Every year, the agencies work together to monitor forest health conditions on millions of forested acres across the state.

178,000 acres of high-elevation Engelmann spruce were affected statewide in 2018.

Approximately one-third of these affected acres were new, or previously unaffected areas. Primary areas impacted include forestlands in and around Rocky Mountain National Park, and portions of the San Juan Mountains, West Elk Mountains and Sawatch Range.

Over the last 18 years, spruce beetle outbreaks have caused tree mortality on more than 1.8 million acres in Colorado, and approximately 40 percent of the spruce-fir forests in Colorado have now been affected. Blowdown events in Engelmann spruce stands, combined with long-term drought stress, warmer temperatures and extensive amounts of older, densely growing trees, have contributed to this ongoing epidemic.

BARK BEETLE INFESTATION WORST IN OVER 200 YEARS

The Czech Republic’s largely coniferous forests are facing the worst bark beetle infestation in at least 200 years. The lower house of Parliament is due on Tuesday to discuss both emergency and long-term measures to combat the voracious insect, which kills spruce trees. 

The amount of spruce wood damaged by bark beetles has risen steadily in the past few years, from 2 million cubic metres of spruce wood in 2015 to more than 5.5 million cubic metres in 2017. Experts are warning that the nation’s forests could be wiped out if the current monoculture forestry format is not unchanged.

Systemic insecticides, meaning those that are implanted or injected through the bark or applied to the soil beneath trees, have not been shown to prevent attack or control populations of bark beetles.

Are those the rats with wings? Are they even rats?

They aren’t rats. Those are the pigeons who are called rats of the sky!

Let’s know why so.

Like the rodents, pigeons’ droppings too pose a health risk and so are they called the rats of the sky.

When it comes to pigeons, everyone’s a hater. They’re filthy disease carriers! Parasites of the urban environment!

Pigeons are commonly found around farmyards, feed mills, parks, city buildings, bridges. They are also a common sight around home bird feeders. Pigeons inhabit lofts, church steeples, attics, caves and ornate architectural features of buildings where openings and flat surfaces allow roosting, loafing and nest building. Nests consist of sticks, twigs, and grasses clumped together to form a crude platform.

They are definitely fine feathered friends, but in reality, birds can be a real nuisance causing costly damage to homes and business premises.

They are known as the ‘rats of the sky’ for a reason. Pigeons carry a range of diseases, some of which may be transmitted to humans if droppings contaminate foodstuffs. Pigeons have been implicated in the transmission of diseases such as pigeon ornithosis, encephalitis, and salmonella food poisoning. For this reason, their presence cannot be tolerated in and around food premises. They also carry mites which can cause skin disease and dust from their feathers can cause respiratory problems.

Large numbers of birds in and around sheds, livestock and poultry facilities, and farm buildings can cause damage and unsanitary working conditions. Birds may consume and contaminate food and water, potentially transmitting diseases to livestock and poultry. Accumulated droppings are messy and can corrode farm equipment. Nests often plug drains and gutters, and birds may cause additional damage by destroying insulation.

Pigeons, familiar to most people, are an exotic (non-native) species. They are generalists in their feeding habits; although they prefer grain and seed, they consume garbage, insects, bread, and other handouts from people. Around barns, pigeons can subsist on spilled or improperly stored grain. Now, many countries have implemented laws to ban the feeding of pigeons.

The droppings can cause a huge mess to your apartment balcony and patio, staining and threatening the surfaces of your outdoor furniture. The acidic quality of pigeon droppings can eat away at your car’s paint, causing significant and costly damage to your automobile.

In addition to being a threat to human health, pigeons can be a threat to human safety, particularly around airports, where pigeon flocks have collided with aircraft, causing human fatalities. Startled flocks can take flight suddenly, causing hazards to motorists and pedestrians.

Utah town stuffed with wild turkeys and some have had their fill

MENDON, Cache County — Hundreds of wild turkeys are flocking through the streets, leaving a mess behind and making lots of noise in the town of about 1,500.

“I’m sitting in my office right now, looking out the window, and there is close to a hundred turkeys out on the city square right now,” Mendon Mayor Ed Buist said Tuesday.

“They’re kind of cool in a way, but there’s just way too many of them,” said homeowner Karla Davidson. She has long gotten over the novelty of the holiday birds.

“They make a mess of the yard. There’s turkey poop everywhere. It’s on the sidewalk and tracked into the house,” Davidson said.

Are these little critters taking over your attic?

Innocent and playful might be the words you associate with squirrels. But just as these critters can be cute they can also be a menace. Squirrels are usually not harmful when they are living in your trees, but they can be very destructive and a health hazard once they invade your home.

Squirrels have been blamed for causing more than £20 million of damage to homes in Britain, including gnawed roof beams and chewed wiring. Last year, Glen and Laura Borner’s three-bedroom home in Hertfordshire burned down after squirrels chewed through electrical wiring in the loft.

Besides the estimated £20 million of damage to properties, the Forestry Commission said that squirrels also caused more than £10 million.

Bedbugs making their way into a movie theater

Have you ever been to a scary movie in a theater? Well in a theater there is something scarier than what is on the screen. Yes, we are talking about the scary bedbugs. With soft cushy seats and a large number of human hosts, the theater is the real estate of bedbugs. Tiny bugs crawl all over carpet at Ontario AMC Theatres

ONTARIO, Calif. (KABC) —

Disturbing cellphone video shows tiny bugs crawling all over the carpet at the AMC Theatres at the Ontario Mills Mall.

Corey Virgilio recorded the disgusting footage while he was at auditorium 16 to watch the film, “Bohemian Rhapsody” around 7 p.m. Sunday.

“We’re sitting in the movie theater. I dropped my keys on the floor. I didn’t want to ruin the movie for anybody, so I said, you know what, I’ll just get it after the movie,” Virgilio said.

He said he pulled out his cellphone and got down on his hands and knees to look for his keys beneath the seats.

“As I look with my cellphone light to try to find my keys, I zoom in and I see something moving,” Virgilio said. “As I zoom in closer and closer, I find easily seen with my eye, at least 15, 20 bugs.”

Virgilio said he immediately notified the movie theater manager and then posted footage of the bugs on Facebook.

He said something needs to be done about these kinds of filthy conditions.

Woman claims bed bugs bit her at Independence Movie Theater

INDEPENDENCE, Mo.  A movie theater that has a history of bed bug complaints now has another one.

Shannon Cunningham told 41 Action News Monday that she believes bed bugs bit her at the AMC Theater in Independence.

“We were there for about 10 minutes of the previews and the next thing I know, we’re sitting there in the dark and I start getting ate up,” Cunningham said. “It felt like crawling, like something was moving on your ankle, like going across your leg.”

The Buckner, Missouri woman said she later found two red marks she believed were bites. She said those marks later swelled up.

Cunningham said she took her complaint to a manager, who told her they’ve had several complaints.

“He stated that they are trying to do something about it and how there’s been bug companies out constantly,” she said. “But he says it’s been a problem for quite some time.”

Pink Bollworm – Major pest of the cotton crop in India

Cotton plays an important role in the Indian economy as it is one of the principal crops of India as the country’s textile industry is predominantly cotton based. India is known as one of the largest producers and exporters of cotton yarn. By the year 2021, the textile industry is expected to reach USD 223 billion.

Cotton which is the commercial crop and the backbone of the textile industry as the major use of the cotton is in the textile industry since the fibers of the cotton plant are harvested and woven into the fabric for production. We can use cotton seeds to extract oil for use in the cooking oil and for manufacturing soaps etc.

Output dips in Telangana on pink bollworm attacks

With farmers completing the third round of picking in several parts of Telangana, total output is pegged at 50 lakh quintals as against the targeted 3.5 crore quintals.

Unfavourable weather conditions and pink bollworm attacks resulted in extensive crop damage in the State. Dry spells in the initial stages of the kharif season, too, led to stunted growth of bolls.

About 20 lakh farmers grew cotton on about 44-45 lakh acres this kharif as against the normal area of 41 lakh acres. In a normal season, farmers get an average yield of 8-10 quintals an acre.

This time, however, yields halved due to the pink bollworm menace, which set in early in the season in some areas.

Pink bollworm again attacks cotton crop in Maharashtra

The pink bollworm has again attacked cotton plants in Maharashtra this year, causing concern among farmers and the State government.

The pest had caused large-scale damage to the cotton crop last year in central and eastern Maharashtra, the State’s main regions producing the commodity.

The pink bollworm attack on cotton has been reported this year from Akola and Washim districts in Vidarbha and Nanded and Parbhani in Marathawada, a senior official in the agriculture department said. “The pest has again shown its presence. It has attacked plants in their early stages of growth. If the pest is not controlled in time, the plants will die and there will be no yield,” he said.

Pink bollworm is an insect which chews through the cotton lint to feed on the seeds. 

A farmer from Nanded district said there was no assurance from the State government on controlling the pink bollworm attack or any communication about advanced methods to check its spread. “Therefore, many farmers decided to change the crop as they had lost the cotton yield last year. The financial aid, as announced by the government for the damage to crops, was also not properly disbursed,” he claimed.

Notorious Beavers!!

Castor Canadensis commonly known as ‘Beaver’ is a semi-aquatic rodent. They spend most of their time in rivers and streams. Beavers are pure vegetarian; they live on fresh leaves, barks, stems, branches, and twigs. Cattail and water lily tubers are their favorite food. They have very sharp incisors which grow throughout their life.

Hence to keep them in check they chew on any kind of tree, wooden objects and sometimes on polymer pipes connected to swimming pools, sewer lines, drainage pipes etc.  

Beavers are well known for their dam building skills. They create dams to raise the water level to build their home or lodges in water. County Airport dealing with ongoing beaver problem

BURNETT COUNTY–– “It’s been frustrating, so we had to bring in a guy to come in and do some beaver trapping,” Airport Manager Chuck Shultz told the infrastructure committee last week. “It’s a private trapper that the DNR in Grantsburg suggested.”

“This is a pretty common thing for Burnett County,” Rod said. “It’s hard to tell how many are left out there.”

Rod explained that the beavers live in a 30-40 acre area surrounding the airport. In that area, they have built five different dams.

Shultz said the dams create giant pools of water at the airport and the nuisance beavers are the main concern.

Bedbugs in hotels

Is it possible to tell that the bed on which u sleep is infested with bed bugs? The real truth is, it can be difficult to spot beg bugs especially during the day as they are nocturnal and their nests which are very tiny will be hidden within the dark crevices under the bed. Disneyland Hotel guest ‘absolutely butchered’ by bedbugs

Ivy Eldridge, who visited the park with her family in April 2018, is claiming she suffered both physical and emotional damage after waking up at Anaheim’s Disneyland Hotel covered in bedbug bites, according to a lawsuit filed earlier last week, The Los Angeles Times and Fox News report.

Ms Eldridge also claims she required medical treatment following the incident.

Ms Eldridge’s lawyer Brian Virag, of legal firm My Bed Bug Lawyer, Inc, filed the lawsuit on her behalf, and named Walt Disney Co. and Disney Parks and Resorts as defendants in addition to Disneyland Hotel.

“People put trust in the Disney name and pay top dollar to stay at Disneyland Hotel. In this case, Ms Eldridge’s trust was betrayed,” Mr Virag said in an article posted to the My Bed Bug Lawyer website.

“This was not a situation where a person sustained one or two bites. Ms Eldridge was bitten throughout her body, including, but not limited to her face, ears, neck, arms, and back.

“She was absolutely butchered.”

The lawsuit further claims that Disneyland was aware of the bedbug infestation, but did not take the appropriate steps to rectify it.

A spokesperson for Disneyland did not comment on the lawsuit but told Fox News the resort took “extensive preventive measures” to keep guests safe.

Holidaymakers attacked by BEDBUGS left ‘mentally scarred’ after infestation at four-star hotel ruins £2,000 trip

A British couple say they were left traumatised after they were bitten by bedbugs during their Spanish getaway.

Sue and John Berry claim to have suffered dozens of bites all over their bodies at a four-star hotel just three days into their two-week, £2,000 holiday.

The retirees are now so fearful of the parasitic insects that they haven’t been on holiday since then.

And they claim that they have been “passed from pillar to post“after complaining to the tour operator who sold them the trip.

Sue told the Liverpool Echo that she and her husband were left “mentally scarred” and embarrassed as strangers stared at their bites.

The couple, from Melling, Merseyside, went on the trip to Levante Park Hotel in Cala Bona, Majorca, in August last year after booking with Tui Gold (formerly Thomson Gold).

They said the company hasn’t responded to their latest correspondence.

Sue, 63, said: “It was my husband’s first holiday away in ten years and within a couple of days it was ruined. I had bites all over my body and he had them on his legs.

“They were on my neck and chest. We looked like we had a disease. I was really embarrassed and it felt like everyone was looking at us.”

Sue said that she was told by a maid that the bites were the work of bedbugs that had infested the room.

At one stage the “infestation” got so bad Sue said they woke up in the middle of the night and could feel the bugs crawling on them.

She added: “We asked to move rooms and they said the hotel was full and it wasn’t possible.

“I was so exhausted and started to cry with frustration as we were covered in bites and it was so sore and uncomfortable.

“That night we sprayed the bed with something the maid had given us but woke up and could see the bugs crawling over us and the bed.“

Since returning home Sue said she and her 67-year-old husband are yet to go on another holiday for fear of wasting their money and being affected again.

Combirepel™ in the lacquer form can be applied topically to the applications. The lacquer is compatible with most of the surfaces like wood, concrete, metal, polymer, ceramic, cables, wires etc.


Combirepel™ in the form of the masterbatch, which can be incorporated into the polymeric applications like wires, cables, polymeric material, instruments and equipment.


Combirepel™  is thermally stable and does not degrade on exposure to heat and sunlight. It does not kill or harm the insect but repels them. It does not volatilize and does not degrade the soil. It is RoHS, RoHS2, ISO, REACH, APVMA, NEA compliant and FIFRA exempted.
